Lightning is a severe weather event which can strike at any time. During the development of a thunderstorm, several states rank as the most dangerous for lightning deaths and injuries. Information is courtesy of the NOAA Technical Memorandum NWS SR-193.

1. Florida
1523 Deaths and Injuries.

Florida was known as the "Lightning Capital of the World" (NASA recently released a study that pegged Rwanda, Africa as the true lightning capital of the world.) With more deaths and injuries than all other states combined, Florida ranks as the #1 target for public safety and lightning awareness campaigns. We know we live here. Its beats living in a corn field. We make fun of ourselves because we can. I have traveled the country for work and would not trade Florida for anywhere. By the way Clearwater has the most lighting strikes of any city in the US. We us to sit on the balcony and watch it.

You can be by car in an hour or two:

The number two cattle producing state in the nation
In Ocala some of the top horse ranches in the world
The Worlds no 1 theme parks
Some of the most beautiful women in the world ( don't even go there)
Some of the worlds greatest beaches
Great weather all though we kid about it. Its 5:10 and its 72 degrees
Small towns that still have a local general store and the kids can go outside and play
Great hunting year round
Great fishing year round
Great sports year round
Great sunsets
Big cities if you want to experience that lifestyle
The oldest city in the United States
Freshwater springs found no where else on earth
Fresh seafood anytime

Yea we have our weirdos. Guess where%95 came from. An old saying, If you can't make it society you might as well not freeze.

You can have Buffet and the rest of the beach trash. Key West was a great place when I was a kid. Now its ruined. The Keys to the North are still very cool. There is no reason to go to Key West unless you want to do the Duval Crawl ( been there done that).

Got drunk and drove to Daytona for the weekend when you already lived on the beach

Down here in South FLA -- Miami specifically -- we have 2 phones books and both are 7" thick. One is lists people from A to Z and the other is everyone with Perez as a last name.

I was born in Tampa and moved to New Port Richey so I could afford a house on deep water access. I swear to you 23 years living here US 19 has been torn up 19 of them. It is right now.

Its ok from Mothers day to Thanksgiving. Then they all show up.

When I retire I am going to move up North and drive real slow. In the left lane
