So is this a good time to pick up a yami sterndrive cheap, since parts will be available now?

Re: Yamaha Sterndrives

Hello again. I took the boat to a mechanic. He put the yamaha impeller in, took the boat out for a test and the boat kept overheating. He took the boat back to the shop to look for impeller pieces, found nothing. Put in another impeller, some aftermarket, generic impeller, test drove it, worked fine. We took the boatout after this and found the boat does start to over heat when idling - reving the engine, or driving will cool it down real fast, I guess water gets flowing at that point. Why would this be happing. Could there still be pieces of impeller in the engine? Could it be the non Yamaha impeller? Why didn't the Yamaha impeller work?

Don't know why, the impeller is from the same manufactor. Now he may not have gotten the rear housing sealed correctly and it may still be leaking air causing the same problem now. The problem you discribe is caused by poor water flow. I would have the pump rechecked and if there is any signs of wear on the inside of the pump, I would have the pump replaced. BTY, Yamaha does not have any complete pumps in stock, but I do.

How much would that pump set me back?

The boat doesn't always heat up when idle, just sometimes. Something just isn't right. We did get a shop manual. Is the pump an easy fix or should we let the mechanic do it? More $$!

Cost? Don't you know that when you buy boat you throw sense and money out the window. I would be sure of the condition of the pump before thinking about replacing it. If you remove the impeller from the housing and see grooves and wear areas where the impeller fits, then the pump has a hard time pulling a suction at low speeds. Anyway the pump comes with a new pully and only sell for a modest sum of $432.

Re: Yamaha Sterndrives

There is no aftermarket pump. The Yamaha pump was built by Sherwood and that's the only supplier of the pump at this time. That's the pump I carry in stock. The thing is, that pump is only used on the Yamaha engine and no other application. Probably once Sherwood runs out, there will be no more. My warehouse supplier is currently showing one pump in stock in each of their three warehouses, not counting the two I have in stock.
