hi - wondering if anyone know what this circled part on Yamaha 6 hp 2 stoke is for and function ? thanks

It is supposed to lock the recoil starter when motor is in gear.----Only allows you to pull recoil with motor in neutral.

hi thanks for great info you are very helpfully + smart , i,ve been wondering use of cover for long time as seems does not do much + when removed , is very little exposed on motor - cover has small internal spring - i guess mostly to keep tension on mounting bolt/s
