Yamaha 50

Got a call from a friend last night and he has a 1996 Yamaha 50 HP 2 stroke with a bum gearcase. (50ilhu) he picked up this 1994 40 HP and wants me to help with swap over the lower unit.

Anyone know if these two motors aren't compatible?

Trying to verify years here..... Not sure why Yamaha makes it so tough. The 50 HP on the tag says 6h5L590258. 50ILHU and he was told 1996

The 40 has these tags and he thought it was an 1994. Looks like a 1984 to me, anyone know?

It is very tough. Takes a walk to the other side of the motor and the month and year of manufacture will be on another sticker.

No it's not. The 2 pictures above are from one motor. Port and starboard side.

Or a tough journey to the Yamaha USA parts catalogs to see that a 40ELH model is from 1987.

and I have never heard of a 50ILRH also
1st letter needs to be a E M P, or T

On the 40 I think it's an 87 or 84... L being the model year designation.

The 50 must be a TLHU but I'm trying to get that verified....which I think equates to a 1996
