So as I am watching the news coming out of the middle east, I notice a few of the weapons that they are "unmothballing" and what do I see, first there was a vickers machine gun (circa 1912-1968 +-) and the next thing that is being reassembled is a old crew served 106mm recoiless (The last one I seen fired at the range was 1979) these are now being used for avalanche control around here.
And I am sure I seen a bren gun and a box of Lee Enfields rifles.

Someone has been hoarding the old stuff.

They maybe old, but they are still newer than the rocks they have been throwing for centuries :D

There's a old picture of Afghan rebels (well freedom fighters back then) celebrating on top of a downed Mi-24 Hind.
I've heard in some intel briefings that it was actually taken down by rocks from above when it was flying NOE in a valley.
It was part of the reason they started flying higher which put them in the environment where Stingers were very effective.

Don't knock the old SMLE. It's my favorite deer rifle. Biggest problem is old ammo. Only takes one shot/year.

Gun's about 80 years old and it still will do a 1" pattern at 100 yds with commodity ammo.

Ancient weapon? LOL I always think of siege weapons such as catapults and trebuchets. I have seen some ancient weapons that used black powder that took 30 minutes to load such as some of the old matchlock weapons used in the 30 Years War (30 minutes to load! no wonder it took 30 years :))

Well ya gotta admit the Vickers is pretty old, the only time I have seen those in action were WW1 documentries.
But as was mentioned, I could have gone with a pile of rocks, or a stick???

(say is that not the MK4 club your wealding today? very ergonomic. ) :D

I just picked up a NOS 1942 Russian Mosin rifle (7.62). It came as orginally outfitted for the soldier with shoulder strap, 6 ammo pouches, bayonnette, cleaning kit, and 1000 rounds of originally packed 7.62 ammo! All as orginally packed away in 1942, during WWII.

My favorite "old" weapon is the stevens falling block; sometimes called the crackshot. Single shot and dead accurate. By holding the cartrides between the fingers of my left hand I could fire five rounds very quickly.

Somebody has been cleaning out their closet. I fear that folks that don't like us got most of them.

Saw in the news that the rebels shot down a jet fighter with a pickup mounted twin.... with one dead barrel.

As so eloquently illustrated, in this thread, NEVER underestimate the effectiveness of "simple".
