Re: Would you vacation in Cuba?

I always said I'd couldn't wait for Castro to kick off so I could visit Cuba.
We're like the only Country in the world that has an embargo and doesn't vacation there. In fact, you can go there - you just have to take a detour.
I should have never seen the spread of Cuban bevvies in Playboy!

Disingenuous is an inaccurate word for something that is to some degree subjective. Maybe Cuba hasn't massacred hundreds of its citizens recently to maintain "control" like China has, but it is still a repressive government. But then again, maybe from your perspective there is a tolerable level of basic human rights violations. When a country denies freedom of speech, pursuit of happiness, religious freedom, freedom of self direction as happens in Cuba and China I find that basically intolerable. That is the well I drink from.

And....Why does our government finds it to be so heinous to have relations with Cuba, but quite the contrary when it comes to relations with China or Saudi Arabia for that matter, which is perhaps the most despicable regime on Planet Earth?

Hypocrisy definitely ought not to be the basis of America's foreign policy, our beacon shines less bright due to such ill conceived promulgations.

Trying to control human or societal behaviour in such a manner, whether nationally or internationally surely leads us to the path of either communism or imperialism, a far cry from our founders proclaimed intent.

Vlad , theres a difference between gvmnt foreign policy and taking a vacation to sample the culinary delights.

Gvmnt foreign policy is not always black or white but areas of grey.
Lets be thankfull that neither of us are running things.

at least in the 60's, we worried about cuba more than china, because they were closer to us, and can launch missles at us, china posed no direst threat to us.

cuba was also in bed with russia, i kinda think the whole cuba embargo was just jfk setteling a grudge with cuba.

My interests are a bit more in depth than mere culinary delights. I believe that my tax dollars should not be going to prop up dictators and nefarious regimes on one hand, on the other the government dictates my freedom of travel and where i can or cannot spend my money.
If it's good enough for you to purchase your Made in China TV, Egyptian Cotton or rugs or whatever crap that they export, then it surely has to be good for me to have my Cuban rum and cigar or procure affordable forms of investment should i choose to.

Not a chance

You may have half a point since i don't smoke, however my rums of choice are not from Cuba, i prefer the 25 yr old Dememara Eldorado from Guyana and Rhum Saint James from the island of Martinique.:D

That's naive.
2/3 of the UN is dictators.
You don't have to go far to see how our tax dollars are spent on covert support of dictatorships around the world.
Cuba is a mere pittance in the big picture.

I fail to see my naivety, perhaps you may have mis-read my postings.

I have nothing against our support covertly or otherwise of some dictatorships, in some countries that is what is needed due to the many tribal divisions and their long held animosity towards each other in providing some form of stability in order for them to function as a country, we have to thank the former colonial empires for most of that result.

I am also fully aware that Cuba's dictatorship does not fall into that category.

BTW, you may also want to reconsider your figure of 2/3 of the countries represented at the UN being dictatorships.

Agreed. Visiting Cuba? To me, spending money there is like voting...maybe I am just way too much of a Yankee.

Vlad: Complaining about what the government does with our tax dollars: we can influence that, but we can't control it. But I say we should put our money where our mouth is- and not spend it when we have a choice and options to spend it somewhere else that is not oppressive or not as oppressive.

We North Americans want to enjoy the benefits of a robust, wealthy life. What we spent last year on fragrances and cologne would stop starvation in the world for nearly a month (if you could actually come up with that much food). For myself, I would rather choose a more modest or morally palatable vacation and divert the savings to world hunger relief, not providing commerce to an oppressive nation. That is something I can control; that's voting with my dollars. What the government does I can only express an interest in by writing my congressmen and senators, and to some degree at the polls.

It would be great to see Cuba reformed. Not that Cuba is the worst place in the world, but since I can choose, I would choose not.

Re: Would you vacation in Cuba?

The way I see it there is much more to a country than it's government's regime. I want to visit Cuba to experience the people and their culture (no tourist resorts for me). Heck I'm ashamed of some of the things my government has done to some of it's citizens and I think I live in the best country in the world! :) (Some of you may disagree)

Mark, i do not disagree with your point of view based upon your chosen lifestyle, What i am a bit ticked off at, is being akin to a traitor for voicing my support to end a failed and unjust policy that adds resolve and longevity to a tinpot dictatorship.

I have said pretty much enough about my standing on this issue, i would very much dislike this thread being closed due to it's content being of a geopolitical nature.
I therefore shall not reply to this thread any further, other members may yet decide to state their preference on the subject "Would you vacation in Cuba".
