Re: Would you vacation in Cuba?
That's naive.
2/3 of the UN is dictators. You don't have to go far to see how our tax dollars are spent on covert support of dictatorships around the world.
Cuba is a mere pittance in the big picture.
Agreed. Visiting Cuba? To me, spending money there is like voting...maybe I am just way too much of a Yankee.
Vlad: Complaining about what the government does with our tax dollars: we can influence that, but we can't control it. But I say we should put our money where our mouth is- and not spend it when we have a choice and options to spend it somewhere else that is not oppressive or not as oppressive.
We North Americans want to enjoy the benefits of a robust, wealthy life. What we spent last year on fragrances and cologne would stop starvation in the world for nearly a month (if you could actually come up with that much food). For myself, I would rather choose a more modest or morally palatable vacation and divert the savings to world hunger relief, not providing commerce to an oppressive nation. That is something I can control; that's voting with my dollars. What the government does I can only express an interest in by writing my congressmen and senators, and to some degree at the polls.
It would be great to see Cuba reformed. Not that Cuba is the worst place in the world, but since I can choose, I would choose
not.
