Wood Transom Replacement Help

Hello All,

I have a 14 foot Alumacraft purchased a week ago. I noticed the wood transom was gone. After much research (mainly from this site) I have my plywood laminated, cut out from using old wood transom as a template and have sealed the new wood transom.

It now is ready to be installed. My question is how do you line up the existing bolt holes in the boat to the existing holes in the aluminum skin that sandwiches the transom in?

I have put together and marked the holes on the rear side of the transom and marked the holes on the aluminum skin on the front side of the transom. They don't seam to line up exactly.

I can't find a clear reference point to measure from due to the shape and placement.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. If pics are needed I'll be happy to provide.

Photos are great so we can check out what you are working on there.

I think most of the guys around here seal up the transom, install the transom, drill out the holes, seal with 5200, set the bolt. There are variations but that's pretty much the gist of it.

Here are some pics. My issue is lining up the existing holes in the rear of the boat to the existing holes in the aluminum skin that cover the transom.

Is there a way to line these up so you can drill the holes in the wood transom?

Sooo, R U saying that if you drill straight and true, from the outside skin to the inside skin that the holes do not align? If you use a drill guide

or a Shop Made Drill Bridge

you can ensure that the holes are straight and true.

Ah, got it. You have an outside and an inside alum skin for that transom.

You may want to drill in from both sides as you have a much better chance at getting it straight on through eh
