Re: Wont start no fire and no fuel

Your boat may well be a 1997, but your engine is a 1995. The other information you should have included is that it is a TBI....

The first things I'd be checking are the fuses and the ignition control relay.

It means you have a problem in the ignition control circuit. You may not have to replace anything, you may have to fix something.

The first thing you have to do is troubleshoot the problem. Here is some info on checking out the 42 code.

Re: Wont start no fire and no fuel

I have gone thru the steps to trouble shoot the 42 code. The first thing is the wire colors on the file you sent Don dont jive with I have for colors but I got thru it anyway. It shows me that the ignition module is bad but I replaced the module and it still will not start. Where do I go from here all of the indicators show that the module is bad and that did not take care of it. Thank you for any further help you can lend me.

With the ignition switch in the run position, do you have battery voltage on the red wire on the coil?

Does your engine have the cool fuel system or a vapor separator tank.

I do have power to the red wire, and I have a vapor seperator on the starboard front side of the engine behind the lower unit oil canister.

Here is some additional wiring diagrams.

Have you tried disconnecting the tach sending wire (white wire on the coil/gray on the tach) and seeing if it will start? The tach can short out the ignition.

Also check to make sure the rotor in the distributor is actually turning when the engine is cranking.

Don I have the tach unhooked under the dash I did that early on due to having seen that before, also the cap removed the rotor is turning.

Re: Wont start no fire and no fuel

here is some info from Volvo on how to test the pickup coil in the distributor. Merc doesn't seem to cover it at all.

Re: Wont start no fire and no fuel

Tested the pickup coil does not short to ground fron F or G terminals and reading fron F to G is 792. Also checked the ignition coil and the reading from B terminal to ground was open, but the reading from B to C reads .5 that is above the .35-.45 spec but the reading from ground to high tension lead is 7650 is that telling me that the ignition coil is bad? Thank You for any input

B to A on the coil (A is ground, or it should be) should NOT have continuity (aka infinity) on your ohm meter. B to D also sounds fine.
Coil is not the problem.
.5 is close enough on resistance tests and not your problem.

The pickup coil also sounds fine to me.

Here is a link to the rest of the manual. Will probably do more to confuse you than to help, but who knows.

Is there any way to test the ECM or does it have to be sent somewhere for testing?
