"with the head milled so its about a 40 hp"

Saw this on craigslist:

"1978 Eninrude outboard 35 hp 2 stroke, with the heads milled so its about a 40 hp."

I'm looking for input on this? This junk now? Or is this a common way to boost HP?

Milling the head won't do much for horsepower. It was probably done, because he overheated it, and nuked the head gasket. Cubic inches are really the only way you can get more horsepower. In this particular year motor, you can take a 25hp motor and increase it to 35hp, by changing the intake manifold and carb, but milling the head won't make it a 40hp.

I never see any topics to really increase HP. No way to spruce up little outboards?

Unless you are into competitive racing, that is to say a real race boat, don't bother. It is hard to tell the difference five horsepower makes. And you may actually make it worse.

its true, I searched for articles to hot rod the 60 degree looper eagle block motors of the 90's...


I found one that delt with suping up the V6...they did some work and got maybe 10-15 more hp... and it netted them another 1 MPH...

hardly seems worth the expense and effort
