Yes, I think you're right. I've been studying it and came up with the same thing you did. Thanks.
Why do you think the key switch won't work? I believe it will. It just has the new color coding.
Red on the switch is battery (same as green on the diagram posted by High Trim)
Yellow with red stripe goes to solenoid (same as white on diagram)
Black is stop (same as either black on diagram)
Black with yellow stripe is other stop (same as remaining black on diagram)

You probably won't be using the other wires. They are for choke and accessory feed, and battery ignition coil (you don't have any of that stuff).

Ok. You're gonna have to explain how that works and where and how to do that. I'm seriously new to this. Thanks.

just struck me, should get a fuse link in there somewhere (inline fuse).

For some of us this is very easy.---------Just take your time and study the wiring diagrams.--As posted before, test what you have to see if it will work !!

OK, this is just for you, as easy as I can make it. Since you are re-engineering the system from what the mfr built, you are going to have to use your own imagination as to actual physical layout and parts mounting.

Oki got everything hooked up under the hood. Here's some pics. I gotta get some kind of rubber grommet or something to protect the wires where they come out of front. And some clamp or something to hold them steady at exit. I also connected wires to the key wires I'm gonna use. Hopefully it all works.

Ah, you even have the factory solenoid mount. Good show.

Can I use a small snowmobile or motorcycle battery as my starting battery for my 18hp evinrude?

Also, which wire should I install the in-line fuse in? An earlier post said I should have an in-line fuse. I know nothing about that, what size fuse what style etc.?

image.jpg. As you can see so far, starter on right, solenoid over on left side, cables coming through front.

Hi Jeff. just tuning in again. I had mentioned the fuse link, above. I used a wired link with a 15 amp fuse, and I THINK I installed it at the starter button I use (boat is still snowed in.) Has to be on the positive side of your circuit, and wired link is about size 16 wire. There may be other advice on where best to install it, and fuse size.

re. question about battery choice. You will get mixed opinion on this. I use a deep cycle with 600+ c.a. There is no onboard charging, so you will want something with enough to storage capacity run lights, depth finder, for a day's fishing.

I already have a Marine battery mounted up front for lights, trolling motor and fish finder. All i need it for is to start the outboard. Will a motorcycle battery work?

Re: Wiring switch to starter solenoid etc.

About the fuse. Do I install it in red battery wire from switch or yellow start wire from switch to solenoid?

BTW I see you're from upstate NY? Where? I'm originally from Binghamton area, Greene to be exact. I'm in NW Ohio now last 20 years.

a regular 12 amp battery will work for starting your motor -- don't know if a bike or lawn tractor battery will do it for you, but probably should (if 12 amp). I'm not sure how many cranking amps that gives you, but i think you are suggesting you don't need much storage just for starting, I agree. Can always take a set of jumpers with you for safety (jump from the aux. bat.).

We're in Penn Yan (Binghamton is juuuust a little bigger. Don't know offhand where Greene is, but guessing it's probably about the size of PY. Farm country, I think?) Finger Lakes. Pretty in the summer. Cold in the winter.

not too comfortable advising on the fuse location -- switch to solenoid wire should be good.

Re: Wiring switch to starter solenoid etc.

Jeff -- checked out the factory parts manual I have for the Fastwin junction box ('57 18) for factory electric start models, and have to report for the record I didn't see any fuses (junction box or start/choke switch assemblies). I was probably thinking of the Big Twin boxes when I installed a fuse link for my starter set up, but still think it's the better part of wisdom to fuse the circuit. I would do it again in mine.

Re: Wiring switch to starter solenoid etc.

A fuse won't cause any problem, and may make you feel good, but OMC engineers didn't figure it was necessary. Yes, put it in the red wire between the battery and switch if you elect to use one.

I don't know what type motorcycle battery you are considering, but it will work if it has decent amp hours (many don't). But generally speaking, it won't give many starts before needing recharged. Furthermore, the heavy load you will be putting on it will shorten it's life considerably. And they are expensive considering the small capacity. The one in my Honda costs as much as a car battery and is pretty puny. Personally, I'd use an auto battery. Some of them are fairly small, yet have good capacity. Browse around at the display at Wal Mart or Auto Zone, etc, and pick something out.

Ok. I can't do much else until the snow goes away and I can get my boat back in the garage. Then I can get the key into the boat and get the battery in the boat and everything hooked up. So here's how I have it hooked up under the hood, positive battery cable to big post left side of coil, along with red wire from switch. Big post right side of coil goes to starter with four gauge cable. Small post left side of coil, 14 gauge wire to ground on starter mount. Small post on right side of coil goes to switch, start position. Battery negative cable goes to starter mount ground. Two black wires from old kill switch going to switch.

I would recommend some heat shrink tubing over the exterior wires to protect and tidy and you are good to go!
