wiring problem

I am restoring a 1956 Aristocraft with a mark 58 mercury. I have it done except the wiring harness. The dash had only the speedometer and the pull switch for the lights in the dash. The wire harness has two round plug covers that go under the dash. I need to know what the color code for the wires are as I have a new ignition, voltmeter and light switch. I would be grateful for any help. thanks

Thank you for your help. It helped as basic knowledge but doesnt tell me what I need to know. I am hopeful that someone could tell me more specifically as to what wire goes where on the dash end of the harness. Once again I would be grateful for the assist.
