wires out of shift box

I have a 1975 135 hp. evinrude it has 3 wires coming out of the shift box red, black, gray. Any idea as to what they are for ? I think maybe for the tac but not sure.

Sounds like tach leads to me. Red is 12V, Black is ground and grey is tach input or sensor.
