Winterizing MerCruiser

I have been asked by a fellow member to post the following in FAQ's. I am not an expert in this area so I thought I would get opinions of accuracy from the experts in this topic. See below.

I am told this is the proper method to winterize Merxcruiser Bravo III
260 hp engine???
Attach garden hose to rabbit ears - attach rabbit ears to the outdrive -
turn on the water -
let engine run until it reaches 165 - 170 degrees -
turn off engine & turn off water -
drain water from front/bottom of engine letting run out the transom
drain hole from the bilge & replace plug -
attach a hose to the rabbit ears from a 5 gallon pail of Anti-freeze up
on the swim platform w/a faucet on it -
turn on faucet to let A/F run through rabbit ears down to outdrive -
(add more A/F to the pail if neccessary as it runs out the outdrive
with engine running) -
place a large catch basin under the outdrive to catch the A/F as it
comes out the outdive -
turn on the engine & run it until the A/F comes out of the outdrive
filling the basin w/a solid pink A/F.
Turn off engine - turn off faucet on 5 gallon A/F pail -
Refill the gallon containers w/ A/F from the catch basin - - -
Remove plug at front/bottom of engine - drain the A/F from the
front/bottom of engine letting it run down
bilge floor & out the transom drain plug hole into the catch basin.
Replace engine plug -after draining A/F - pour A/F back into gallon
containers -
remove rabbit ears - screw in transom drain plug to keep cold air out
for the winter -
(I think I covered all bases on this subject so far I have been told
several ways to do it -
one of them is certainly 'not' pouring A/F into hose at thermostat -
it does not winterize the entire engine & it continually weakens the
hose when re-clamping)) ???

Do you recommend the above procedure a thorough winterization or do you
have a better method -

Re: Winterizing MerCruiser

It sounds very HIT and MISS and cant help but spill anti-freeze all over the place low-tox or NOT

And it may take care of freezeing BUT does not winterize the engine or systems at all

It's definately not FAQ worthy.

Ayuh,.............

That might be a Debatable Thread,.........

But it's Not FAQ Quality............

I can Shoot Plenty of Holes thru it...........

Like leaving the Bilge Plug In,..........
Alittle Rain Water,+ Things start Freezing,+ Breaking.......

If we're in need of a Winterizing FAQ,......
Don's thread pined at the Top gets My Vote,.....
It's as Complete, yet Generic as Possible,+ Covers All the bases.............

Re: Winterizing MerCruiser

I left my drain plug in by accident one winter. Had water up over my starter which I then had to replace.
