will not start because it is stuck in gear

Took my 77 searay with the 888 to the lake, would not go into forward so I tried to use the shift interuter. when I did so it stalled while in gear and now will not start. any ideas on how to get it out of gear.

Disconnect the shift cables at the shift plate, and find out if the control cable or control is bad or if the lower shift cable going to the drive is bad or not. If it's in forward, pull the outdrive and check the cable.
Since it didn't die when you tried moving the control, I would guess the cable from the throttle/shift control to the engine compartment is froze up.
