Title basically says it all....to be more specific will a Donzi 22 ZX with itts low freeboard survive day boating in 4-5 foot rolling swells if encountered in the ocean.

(the one I came across has the step-hull).

Thanks!

Sure. Most boats will easily deal with 4-5 foot rolling swells. It's the steep, choppy stuff that's bad news.

That said, there are MUCH better choices if you intend to operate on the ocean often. The key features to look for are a self-bailing cockpit and outboard power. Boats with those two features are almost always designed specifially for constant ocean use and will reward you with better safety, better resale value and lower maintenance costs.

Just to add to Mischief's post - be more concerned if the operator can handle those swells. The most important part on a boat isn't the engine, isn't the hull, it's the person at the helm. If you aren't confident that you can handle it, start out in smaller water to gain the experience before venturing out. As for the boat, 4-5 ft rolling swells is no sweat. 4-5 ft chop would be completely different.

get an ocean boat for the ocean. flat "racing" hulls and bowriders, at the 22 foot and smaller size, are not made for it.

you can be safe, but can't go fast, over 4-5' swells, and few people would go out in them in a 22 fast boat just for riding around

I think a Donzi ZX is a Deep V, steped hull, offshore racing cuddy. It's not a flat "racing" hull or bowrider. That being said, I agree with the other posts that skill of the captain is the most important factor. If you are experienced in 4-5' swells that boat can handle it. Although I don't think it will be much fun, unless you have a very young back. In 1-2' swells that Donzi will be in it's sweet spot.

Just curious in case one got "caught" out in 4-5' swells.

Thanks!

does not sound like fun to me. - it depends on how much abuse the driver can endure rather than the boat taking a pounding- you will give up before the boat does.
