What is the difference between these two and will a 74 even fit on a 79 mid section.

Most 74 115 parts will not fit or exchange past 1977 115. Even parts that look the same, like the flywheel, are not.

There was a new (not rebuilt) powerhead listed on ebay that said it would fit a 73 to 79. When I questioned the seller he said it would fit a 79 but I didn't bite. Sounded good for 1500 dollars. I'll just keep looking for a good fresh water block I can rebuild for my 79. If I thought it might have worked for me I would go and look at it but I'm not sure that I could tell the difference.

You can, with slight modifications, put a newer powerhead (one with the 1978 style bolt pattern) on an older mid section but an older powerhead on a newer mid section will not work properly.

What year motor do you have? If 79 & newer and you need a powerhead there is a very easy way to spot one that will work.

Mine is a 79 but has been in the salt most of its life. How do I tell the difference by just looking at the outside of the block.

Any V4 crossflow that has the cast-in lower front pan mounts is a direct bolt on for your mid section and all the internals, especially the crank, will enterchange. If the front lower pan mounts (with the rubber insert) are bolted on, it's earlier than 79.

It can have the flat or bubbled exhaust plates, that makes no difference.

No those are cast. The cylinder heads are newer, too.

so this may be a 79 to 93 rather than an 73 to 79 as the seller claims. This is about a hundred miles from my house maybe I will go look at it.
