will a 1987 alternator, fit on a 2002

i have a mercruiser 3.0 2002 with electronic ignition, will a 1987 3.0 mercruiser alternator from a points ignition work on my set-up? they both fit, but the older one is much larger. thanks

Same connections? if so, I can't remember anything thats different. Check the amp output on both. You don't want to go smaller. Make sure it's a marine style.

is there a regulator in the older ones, and the new ones have it on the engine somwhere? or do i not know what im talking about. somone told me that might be an issue. thats why the size difference
