Will 1979 powerhead work on 1992 motor?

I need to replace the power head on my 1992 Mercury XR6, I found a rebuilt powerhead in the local paper but it is a 1979, will it work on my motor?

It will bolt up but that about all. The Xr6 is a 2.5 liter and the 1979 is either a 2 liter(150/175) or a 2.4 liter 200hp. Better to find a later model 2.5 engine like you haveas carbs,jetting,gear ratio
