Re: Wild sounds

You know 495V JB is a very wise man considering his youthful years. He knew exactly the right lure to bring us out of hibernation just to say hi. Bait is very important when going for exact species and i would say he set the hook pretty good.

How far you going to be from Leach Lake Jb? i hope to be their at least until the 28th. As we get closer lets see how to hookup. You already know where 495v and myself will be.

Howdy, GF.

We usually spend a night at Bemidji on the way up. Walker/Leech Lake wouldn't be more than a few miles detour and we could spend a night there instead.

I would enjoy meeting some fellow musky nuts for a few casts and perhaps an adult beverage of our choice.

Just in case you guys never saw a LOTW musky or forgot what one looks like:

Oh JB your cover is gone. I use to have dark hair at one time to. A friend of mine owns the only resort on the Lake and sits only a thousand feet from the Homestead. How about a peaceful cabin with a day of fishing and finsh it off with a little cook out. then sit and enjoy the same sunset as i posted earlier. 495v and myself will warm the biguns up for you until you arrive.

Re: Wild sounds

Need to discuss this with my descendants.

Only Resort on the lake? Which lake? We have stayed at The Ivanhoe on the SE corner of the lake and many years ago we went to a resort way up north on Portage Bay across from the dam. Is that the one?

Fishing was better up north, but never as good as a bad day on LOTW. :D

Acually JB The Homestead is on Steamboat Lake between Walker and Cass Lake off 371. A Channel runs from Steam Boat to Leach which I can get to within twenty Minutes. Its only about 2,000 acres and pretty much a quiet front with some very nice fish...

Re: Wild sounds

Yup, Matttt.

Musky was bigger than she looks. I didn't hold her 2' closer to the camers like most fish pics. A bit over 40". :)

Re: Wild sounds

yep, that's bigger than she looked.
40" is definately a respectable fish.
biggest one I've evr landed is 36"
lost one a few years back that was a monster,
but we all have "the one that got away" story.
we were fishing for smallies and it hit a
black grub... only had 8lb test. ran out all
my line on the spool and then I was done.

Re: Wild sounds

I worked that fish for about an hour. She followed every musky lure in my inventory but wouldn't hit.

I got impatient and switched to my Walleye rod and tossed a firetiger Bagley DDKB-2 (2" Deep Diving Killer Bee) at her. She nailed it immediately. Eight pound Iron Thread with no leader on as light a rod as you can get for baitcasting (GLoomis), Ambassaduer Pro Max 1600 reel.

Took a while. Several spectacular jumps. Superb drag performance. :)

I remember the strike and the fight much better than the weight in my hands. :)

I caught two more muskys and half a dozen walleye on that lure that day (added a light wire leader).

Muskys want what they want on any given day and sometimes wont hit anything else. You just have to experiment. I now have about a dozen Bagley DDKBs in several patterns and sizes. :D

Re: Wild sounds

Jb, awesome fish. I caught one just over 40" last time I was in Canada. Unfortunately we used the last pictures in the camera for the 38" Northern I caught on the cast before. I do have witnesses. I sure envy you guys being able to go up for a good musky hunt. Hopefully I will make it up there this year if the plans do not fall through.

Re: Wild sounds

Hi, Scoop.

I dreamed for many years of fishing LOTW.

Now that I have the time (and bucks) to do so I go every year.

A thought: As I dreamed I buried myself in my career. If I hadn't survived my first heart attack I would never have made it at all. I've had 2 more since then, and fortunately survived both of them, too.

Careers are important, but so are dreams. Don't wait too long as I almost did. :)

Re: Wild sounds

Best sound effects? Two come to mind.
Firstly, a windy day. Not just any windy day though. It has to be warm, and it has to be moderatly cloudy or overcast. Just sit and listen to the gusts brushing the trees back. Not a gale, you understand, maybe 20mph or so. And you don't want to sit in a cold wind, so it needs to be Summer. But ah, that sound.
Second sound: A Summer rain on a metal roof.

A friend of mine's father had a farm about 20 miles out of the city, and I rented a big garage that had a tin roof from him so I could work on my precious junk car collection. But on those certain days, you would just pull out a lawn chair and sit near the open garage door and either listen to that wind or the rain, as you looked out across the fields. Enough to put you into a trance.
The place was sold in the late 80's, and I never did find a replacement. :(

Re: Wild sounds

great sounds to me:

-a campfire crackling with a bubbling brook in the background
-a gentle breeze in the hardwood treetops in early autumn, and the clicking of the leaves falling to the ground
-when my little girl is pretending to have a tea party with her dolls
:)

Re: Wild sounds

I like the peaceful sounds of the loons as well, but two sounds I will never ever forget:

1. I lived on a secluded lake in northern Ontario near Iron Bridge, Ontario, and in the middle of winter, there was only one other family living on that beach, and the road ended about 75 yards from my place, at the boat launch. One night about in late January I was out gathering firewood, when I heard a strange sound, that got louder and shriller. I realized it was a timberwolf (I think, at least-we had seen a timberwolf around the day before) taking down a deer on the ice on the lake just off the boat launch. I can't possibly describe the sound, but it make my hair stand up, and seemed to penetrate right to the bone...Next day, no sign of the deer, but a bloody spot of ice was easily visible. It took my golden retriever hours to settle down, and stop shaking.

The second was when I was a kid, about 10 years old, too many years ago, and was fishing in a 14 foot boat off the southwest end of Whidbey Island, in Puget Sound north of Seattle by 20 miles or so. My older brother (13) and I were salmon fishing, and there was a "hole" we liked to fish about 100 feet deep and this time we anchored. Earlier we had heard a sound in the distance, and commented on it, but thought nothing of it really. All of a sudden a large whale (not sure what kind, but lots bigger than a killer, which we saw all the time) suddenly surfaces close enough that we got wet from the spray. I believe I sent a speed record for pulling 100 feet of anchor rope up. We weren't in any danger, but as a 10 year old, rational thought sometimes is not available. My brother pulled the starter on our old reliable 30 hp Johnson, and i think I pulled the last 20 feet of anchor rope while we were on a plane gettin' out of there!

Re: Wild sounds

Hi JB, regarding your comment,"Careers are important, but so are dreams. Don't wait too long as I almost did."

Amen, I couldn't agree more, I put so much time and effort into my career I feel like the poor sap in the Harry Chapin song "Cat in the Cradle". BUT, that was then, I wised up, now the job/career is just a pay check, I couldn't care less about it. By the way, at this time next year I will be retired and living/boating/fishing in Florida, so some dreams can come true, bring it on.

Re: Wild sounds

Maybe some day I will be able to have some of my favorite "Wild Sounds" around much more often than I do now. I heartly agree with all of the big birds, and would add the sound of a woodpecker pecking. A crackling campfire is also one of my entire family's favorites.

For now, the wild sounds I get to appreciate include the engines and shrill whistle of a long, long train, the barking of the multitude of man's-best-friends all over the neighborhood (even in the middle of the night), and occasionally bees in the hive.
