Put yourself in this picture:

You are on a Northwoods wilderness lake. The sun has just set and the horizon still glows with gold, orange, red, purple and blue. The water is like glass.

There is no sound or sight of man or his works.

A loon cries.

Your blood pressure drops, you sigh and think, "It doesn't get any better than this." :)
If you have a companion you might say it aloud.

Been there? If not, promise yourself to be there before your time is up.

I have noticed at least one other experience that does the same thing to me.

The Hideout is 20 miles from the nearest small town. Whitt is a Post Office and a VFD Station a couple of miles away. The nearest highway is about a mile and gets a vehicle every 20 minutes or so during the day.

I sat on my porch this evening, to watch the day fade and enjoy a rusty nail.

Far to the East there is a glow in the sky. Dallas/Ft. Worth is about 60 miles.

The neighborhood coyotes began their nightly concert.

I got that same feeling. :)

What wild sounds give you that feeling?

Along the Missouri River, the sounds of the current going into the rocks and across the sand... ultimate tranquility.

JB
Years ago i was out salmon fishing on the west coast, across from Duncan bay Vancouver island.
A fog came in in the evening it was raining lightly but no wind. I could see the street lights barely from the highway. it was incredibly
quiet ,I could here only the sound of water lapping against the hull of the small aluminum boat and the repetitive sound in the distance from the Quadra island fog horn. Almost lulled me to sleep. Then with out warning a killer-wale blew its
air-hole not 100 feet from me .At first it scared me but after a few moments the sound was incredibly relaxing. never forgot that moment and can still picture it in my mind like it happened yesterday.

Re: Wild sounds

Sitting against a tree in the bush, hearing a Morepork hoot or a Kiwi whistle is the one that gets me.
As an aside I sometimes think that as I fall asleep I can almost hear my fathers voice talking to me. It also makes me feel great!
Ross

JB,

The loons have done the same for me.

However, I've been out in the desert here, miles from anywhere, and the sky is something to behold!

The really neat thing is that there is NO sound, at all.

Loons!!
But how about a lonely old frog, CRROOOAAAAKKKK?

I saw a movie last week, DESERT scene, you could hear the sounds of an EAGLE and a LOON calling back and forth to each other. I turned it off.

I've been up north in Loon country several times.
my favorite place on earth! here in upsate/ farm
country, in the summer the tree frogs are amazing.
at first very loud, but after a while it is so
soothing it will put you right to sleep. also like
sleeping in the v-berth on a large boat and hearing
the water lap against the hull.

I like running out into the Gulf of Mexico just at daybreak. The rising sun, the sound of the water on the boat and the gulls squawking is music to my ears. The land receding behind you makes it seem like you're leaving all your troubles behind.

Re: Wild sounds

The sounds of the loons are great. I have had a loons swim under water around me within 10 feet. They are very big birds. Loons and Eagles calling to each other? Ha Ha ha. When an Eagle comes around, the Loons have a special warning cry which is what roscoe was getting at. Bald Eagles eat Loon chicks and will even attack single Loons if given a chance. The Loon Cry is so distinctive that we always know when an Eagle is on the lake just by the loon cry.

Another sound of nature is when you are far back in Canada on a deserted lake. You do hear some birds, you hear the sound of the water lapping at the boat. It is a sound unlike any other. I am sure a lot of you have experienced this either canoe camping or fishing, or fly in fishing. It is an odd but good feeling to take rivers, streams,or plane back as far as you can go with no one around. You really are one with nature.

Re: Wild sounds

For me its the migratory sounds at night of high flying geese, and the cicadas of mid to late summer in the evenings. As a boy, my voice was high enough that I could get the geese to honk back at me every time. I still try, but they are mute.

Does this look familiar JB?

This is my backyard when i go to the Homestead up in the North Woods. At dusk we sit around a fire and listen to the Loons as they gather for the evening. We watch as our neighbor the Beaver swims past our dock as he heads for his favorite Popular.

Between Ten and Two am. you will find us trolling in front of the cattails for the bigger Walleyes that come into feed. Where else can you go and have the whole lake to yourself except at Lake of The Woods or Leach Lake.

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH....I thought it was already June with JB's description. What a vivid picture you just painted in my head....right on the money. 3rd week in June and it will no longer be just an image in my head but a tranquil view of my favorite hole. Well back to looking at good ol' cold Chicago. But hey, June is just around the corner, right? right? right? You should join us JB. Gonefishin and I are going to hammer um'.

Re: Wild sounds

All of this sounds good but to me sitting beside a stream or river that makes sort of a gurgling sound as it swirls(lowland) or perhaps falls along rocks(mountain) knowing there are fish to be caught and perhaps just for relaxation a nice small fire to take the chill of the evening air and a favorite beverage to sip on makes it all really stand out. Of course if my wife and kids were there with me silently enjoying it too it makes it all the better. And I have to say unless it is a mountain stream the coup de grace would be a couple catfish rods out with at least one just starting to wiggle as a fish picks up the bait.

Re: Wild sounds

I will be going to Lake Winnibigoshish from the 14th of June until the 21st. It looks like I will miss you. I think GF will be headed home around then as well. Maybe you can spend a few days on Winnie before heading to LOTW. Let us know. It sure would be an interesting couple of days. I am bringing the outdoor, away from home, grill God(a buddy of mine that is an excellent cook and one heck of a fisherman. Last year we strapped a giant routisserie machine to the deck of the pontoon, cooked up a 50lb Black Angus beef). Let's see what we can do. I could probably get you a great rate on a cabin for a couple of day's. I would offer for you to stay with my group, but we're already pulling 12 guys, and I just don't think I have room for 3 more but you never know. Let's try and get something going!
