Why o' why?

I just bought a Triton with a 50 HP Yamaha 2003 motor. It has a running issue but going through everything I noticed that the oil was filled all the way to the top! Why would somebody do that? Was the previous owner just dumb? Or was there a reason somebody would do that? Still trying to diagnose this low power mode and wondering if that has anything to do with it.

drain the oil tank to make sure there is no water in there, but I do not see how over filled with oil would cause running issues

I'm actually starting to believe that it's not the motor at all and possibly the hand throttle. I'll probably just go ahead and change the oil because I don't know when it was changed last and I'll be able to see it then if there's any water in it

there should be a trap and drain line on the bottom of the oil tank that water would collect in ,if you want to drain just some oil out to see if any water was in the bottom

Is this a 50 two stroke or an F50 four stroke?

You imply that it is a two stroke but it sounds like a four stroke.

If oil level is way up on a 4 stroke there are serious issues.

Have you drained the oil from the crankcase?---How much was in there ?-----Any water ?-----It is possible that the previous owner had no idea about motors.----Not uncommon today.----May have seen or heard that oil tank ( 2 stroke ) needs filled to the top.-----Did the same on this 4 stroke because he had absolutely no idea of how motors work / are maintained !!!

True...yeah it's a 4 stroke

Is it possible that all the extra oil has been diluted with fuel ..... does it smell like oil. Its not unheard of for leaky float valves to allow fuel to drain into motor and dilute the oil

Well at this point the only thing left is literally the carburetors. I'm making a parts list tonight and getting parts ordered and I'm going to rebuild the carbs. I'm literally done everything I can up to this point so when I rebuild the carbs this thing should run like a champ LOL

Well... Every time we thought it was one thing It turned out to be another then another then another so I've changed out the plugs, the coils, the fuel filter and fuel pump. I've changed the entire fuel line from the tank to the engine as well as a float. I've talked to about 30 mechanics and I've been on the forums trying to find answers. There is literally nothing left other than the carbs. There's a full series on YouTube on my exact engine and the guys motor is doing the exact same thing as mine and he shows how to rebuild the carbs step by step. I kind of got lucky on that one!
