hey look....a squirrel ! :d:d:d

LOL....couldn't be a forum with a better bunch of guys.

It gets a little heated and some disagreements from time to time, but I like to call it brainstorming. Sometimes a lot can be learned just from disagreeing. When everyone puts in a $.02 it can add up to $.50 really quick... then when the pro's put in thier $.10 it adds up to dollars, and starts to become very valuable information.

Re: Sorry guys..

There's always going to be a difference between how a professional and home hobbiest do things. In some cases they use the same materials...........sometimes not. And both can produce a good result.

In my case I'm taking 10 months to do a repower at my own pathetically slow pace, where a real engine shop would turn it around in about 5 days. I only have to take care of 1 boat. A commercial shop might have a backlog of a dozen lined up.

What's a fun hobby to me is called work to somebody in the business.

Re: Sorry guys..

Great thread.

I've occasionally butted opinions with YD here, and I think it speaks well of his character that he hasn't crawled off somewhere to ignore us all :)

The critical thing I think people here tend to ignore is that there IS NO ONE "right way" to do boat repair and construction. YD's methods and materials are based on hard earned experience in his shop, and reflect a balance of giving his customers quality and making his business work. Very few of us here have to make the same sorts of decisions when repairing our boats, so sometimes there's a better way to do what he suggests if we're not constrained by needing to satisfy the customer and make a profit. That usually gets noted.

Sometimes I and others here react badly to "common knowledge" facts YD has lived by for years. Boat shops each have their own gospel of what works and what doesn't, and it's not uncommon for people in the business for years to not be familiar with newer materials and techniques that others will swear by. As long as everyone here communicates respectfully, however, we should all be able to get along and learn from each other.

That's the challenge in learning anything... most of the time you won't admire your teachers, or even like them. But everyone has a story to tell...

Re: Sorry guys..

Without yours and others help, i wouldnt have undergone my project. I was overwhelmed with information and different styles and techniques. i asked questions...lots of question most of which have probably already been answered, but there is just so much information on here to find it all, even when putting keywords into the search box.

My favorite thing about being apart of this forum is the variety of answers i get. i ask questions like what method did you use to replace your stringers and the associated cost. i got many answers, from the typical wood replacement to sea cast. using poly or epoxy. Knowing that i can fix my boat to last a long time with 500 bux, or 2000 bux is great. it helps me identify how much i want to spend and what i think would be the best for my applications based off your application. if i know ur gonna rebuild ur boat to last 50 years. and i think im only gonna have mine for 10 years. ill make my project a hybrid between yours and a cheaper one. or whatever suits my needs.

Without you guys this site would be nothing. Without you guys I wouldnt even be here. I wouldnt have a boat. it would have cost me 5,000-8,000 im sure to have my deck, stringers, transom replaced. and im just guessing. instead i have a 1,700 boat that im gonna drop 1,500 bux into redoing all the wood and have a solid drive train.

hell if iboats didnt exist, and your excellent feed back didnt exist. id be sitting in a tube floating down the river (cheaper than boating) (almost as much fun, especially if you bring the beer :), it helps that its the same section of river that the beginner white water rapids raft down class II with one class III

:) THANKS!

Re: Sorry guys..

Thank you for this post YD. Without going into details, I think this will make lots of people view your posts differently. And in a good way.
