Scoop, if gramps put all that money in a simple
savings account, he'd be a rich man today.
there are plenty of safe places to keep your
money for retirement, the stock market ain't
one of them. simple us savings bonds would work
too...
the problem is the number of people retiring will
go up faster than the number of people contributing.
either they run outa $, or they raise all of our
SS contributions greatly. am sure they will remove
the current ceiling too.

Social Security was never intended to be a sole source of retirement income. People are supposed to take care of that themselves.

SS is/was meant to be a "safety net" for those in society that are less fortunate or have run into real trouble for reasons beyond their control. Spending too much money or living beyond ones means is not "beyond their control."

Mellowyellow, made some good points. A savings acoount would be a better investment than SS. What does SS pay-maybe 1.5%. There are PLENTY of investment opportunities out there that can meet or beat that and still be safe.

And yes, our elected officials did squander the SS funds. There is no such thing as a "SS lockbox", it's always been in the general fund.

Welcome to the board Larry M Vasquez,

There are some people on this board that are bias on being educated. I only have a high school diploma and some tech training from the military. All my other knowledge comes from On Job Training and trial and error. Once in awhile I'll misspell something and someone will poke fun at it. I don't care if they do and I don't care if someone misspells something, or puts it in the wrong context. I'll respect others the same as they respect me. Friends should not be measured on their education but the respect they have for one another. As far as I'm concerned you are welcomed here no matter what your opinion is.

Religion and Politics are areas that each side swears their right. At 51 I have not voted in any election because of my convictions from the 60s.

Alot of promises and little return on the interest. Although I did register this year so I at least am getting Closer.

Now if Derwood or Moose ever runs for anything I'm voting.
