Now I'm confused......lol boom.....your new modem/router combo has no WLAN port right....it's an all in one thats why your just being greedy four computers isn't enough.....you want more eh

Yes and Yes. The new combination modem/router has no WLAN port. It just has 4 device ports plus the DSL Telephone jack port. It is also a WireLess router but I have it disabled.

And yes I NEED more than 4 ports. NEED is not greedy, only WANT is greedy.:p

The 8 port Netgear router has a WLAN port as well as the 8 device ports.

What cable are you using? I ask because its not mentioned and its the simplest answer. Straight thru cable to connect modem to router and router to pc, but to connect router to router you need a crossover cable otherwise they will not communicate. Like all TS start with basics, KISS method, no insult intended :D

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

What I am getting out of this is that he had a cable modem going to a 8 port router...now he has a DSL modem/router combo, that he wants to turn off the wireless broadcast and go to his existing 8 port router...I don't see where he wants to have a modem with a 4 port router and connect that to an 8 port router for essentially a 11 port setup...

so what is it

option 1. modem/router combo with its 4 ports with a 8 port netgear router used to expand the system to a 12 port(actually 11 port) setup...

option 2. modem/router combo with the router disabled feeding a 8 port router for a total of 8 wired ports...

If option one is what hes going for you have to set an option to link the routers in the settings...

If its option 2 and with it wired properly and cycled on properly it still doesn't work its a PPPoE setup problem...

I wanted to continue to use my 8 port Netgear Router as I have about 6 different things hooked to it.

It sounds to me like it has always been option 2 he is going for...Century Link requires PPPoE in the modem and in the router settings to allow the modem and the router to establish a connection...If the modem is plugged into the wall and works on its own, then you plug port 1 into the wan port on the netgear router then plug port 1 on the router into a computer...If you can access the settings page with 192.168.1.1 but have no internet connection, the only thing it can be is the PPPoE settings in the modem and the router are wrong...You should be able to click a status tab and see what the IP address the ISP assigned is...If its blank or 0.0.0.0 something is wrong...

Once again, I have the EXACT SAME SETUP WITH THE EXACT SAME PARTS WITH THE EXACT SAME ISP...

Why not do option 1 since the modem/router is already set up properly? Then he only has to set up his Netgear router instead of reconfiguring both.

You do understand that his internet is working properly with his new modem/router right? He has his setting correct in his new modem/router.

I'm not telling him how I want him to set it up...I'm telling him how to make it work the way he wants it setup...

But his new modem/router is just a modem now...for the netgear router to connect to the modem it needs pppoe settings...

Read his previous post. he has internet connectivity as far as I can tell with his new modem/router combo. Are you reading this differently than I am. Maybe Boomyal can chime in to clear this up.

For the short term I gave up trying to get everything to work through my 8 port Netgear router and just plugged a few of the computers directly to the ActionTec modem/router. That is how I am operating now. Yesterday I canceled my Cable subscription and returned all the equipment so I cannot go back to it.

Your reading it wrong...I know the modem/router works and its fine...He has 4 ports available and he is using them...He wants to make one port the wlan out of the modem and connect it to the wlan on the netgear and have just a modem with one cat5 going to the wlan in on the router and have 8 ports out to do what he wants...

My head hurts!!!

If he has PPPoE set up correctly on his ActionTec modem/router. He doesn't need to do it again on his Netgear router.

Ok, I think I have a grasp on this situation. I had hoped to get down on my knees today and plug the Netgear back into the loop and to get the DCHP disabled. Howsomever circumstances kept me from getting to it. It was 84 degrees out today after weeks of rain and 50 degree weather my lawns needed some desperate attention, not to mention my body and psyche that needed, just as desperately, to get out and grab some of that Heavenly Vitamin D.

Tomorrow will be the likely day. It would be oh so nice to have all this stuff right up on top of the desk but that is not in the cards.

It's still high atop my to do list, dolluper. I've gotten lulled into complacency by just getting by, using a couple of the ports on the on the combination modem/router. My tolerance for high tech gimmickry seems to wain more and more with the passage of time.

I still have to get down on my knees, taking my life in my hands amidst the tangle of wires to plug my computer directly into the 8 port so that I can go in and turn off the DHCP.

With the rain finally having stopped, as soon as I get my 8"s of back lawn mowed/hacked down (once again), I may give it a go this afternoon. I'll report back as to my success or lack thereof.

Project Router was delayed again. After some ferocious winds, 24 feet of fence came down. Spent the day, with the neighbor, propping the fence back up, awaiting the day when it can be replaced.
