Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

Bruce, are you saying to hook one computer directly to the 8 port netgear router, eliminating the DSL Modem/Router, for starters? Make the recommended changes, then install the modem/router back in between the 8 port and PC? Also if I choose a different LAN IP, does that mean that I would need to use that new number to access the Netgear Router, in the future?

I also do not understand about using, or not, the WLAN port. If you are talking about ports on the back of the modem/router, there is only the DSL telephone line in port and the 4 ethernet out ports. If your are talking about ports on the Netgear 8 port router only, one RJ45 Internet in port (from the modem) and the 8 RJ45 ports out to the various devices.

I am also a bit confused because Checkfire seems to be saying that I need to make changes in the Modem/router, not the 8 port router only?

1) I believe your new modem/router is all configured correctly so you leave it alone.
2) Hook your PC up to the Netgear router stand alone to configure it.
3) Your Netgear router is going to be between the modem/router and your PC. Further communications with your Netgear router will be with the new IP address.

Checkfire is having you do a different type of configuration than what I am telling you but may work as well. Personally, I wouldn't touch your new modem/router since it is working properly. You are only turning your old netgear router into an access point.

The port on your netgear router that you call the modem port is the WLAN port.

IP address conflict. Both routers are probably configured to use the same one.

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

1) I believe your new modem/router is all configured correctly so you leave it alone. Probably true, as it works as a stand alone item. It also is working well as a router as it is currently operating 4 different devices.

2) Hook your PC up to the Netgear router stand alone to configure it. Gotcha. I assume that I hook the PC to one of the eight outlet ports, as I would do if the PC was getting it's signal through the router?

3) Your Netgear router is going to be between the modem/router and your PC. This I do not understand. I cannot see how the 8 port Netgear router only, would ever be between the PC and the MODEM/router. It appears that you have directed me to hook the PC directly to the 8 port router for purposes of reconfiguring that router. After that was done it seems the order of components should be modem/ router, 8 port router then PC Further communications with your Netgear router will be with the new IP address.

Checkfire is having you do a different type of configuration than what I am telling you but may work as well. Personally, I wouldn't touch your new modem/router since it is working properly. You are only turning your old netgear router into an access point.

The port on your netgear router that you call the modem port is the WLAN port. If I did not use that modem Port/ WLAN port, where would I eventually re-hook up the line from the Modem/Router to the Netgear router only?

Sorry for being so obtuse!

I think we are of like mind here. Item #3 will be exactly as you state.

The connection from the Modem/Router will hook up to the Netgear router to one of its 8 ports. It may require to be connected to the WLAN port but I would use one of the LAN ports first to see how it works.

Go from port 1 on the modem/router to the wan port of the netgear...If the modem works connected directly to the computer then you don't need to do any other setup(as long as the wireless broadcast is turned off)...Go into the netgear setup and select PPPoE and type the username and password...click save...if you have an option to reboot the router in the settings do that otherwise power cycle the router...The click run...Type CMD...Type inconfig /release...Then type ipconfig /renew...under ip address is will say 192.168.1.something...If it says 0.0.0.0 or can't connect its a different problem...

Centurylink requires PPPoE to work...You also need DHCP enabled in the netgear router...

BTW what is the actual model # of your netgear router...

Boom your IP gave you a modem....with your password and ID already configured right or wrong? usually it's already configured if not they give you instructions to configure.......so you pnp just by connecting phone line to modem and your cable to computer from modem
So now you want more computers on your network.....you add a router by taking the Cat wire off from the computer and put it in Wlan port of the router......from the other avail ports you connect as many computers as you want at least one.....but first you have to configure your router to comunicate with the modem The computer you have hooked up from your router you type `192.168 XXXX different for your router manufactor once you get to the router you make your own username and pasword {just for logging into router}..so then you start entering all your infromation password, ID, mac address :most will do auto mac address on your request so your ip company sees only one computer ,,,,most routers have a standard set up just follow directions NOTE you may need your pass and ID from IP company to configure your router......me thinks thats what your missing

Dolluper and hrdwrkingacguy

Boom already has the PPPoE set up correctly on his new modem/router. He just wants to add his existing Netgear router as another access point. He already has internet access if you read his other posts.

He needs to configure his Netgear router to communicate with the new router.

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

Yes, his new item is a combo modem/router. He's turning the wireless portion off. He doesn't have to set up the new router in bridge mode. He could but then what i am describing would be different. I don't see a need to do that since his new one is all set up and communicating properly on the ethernet.

His older router just needs to have dhcp turned off.

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

Yeah, dolluper, quit trying to confuse me.:p Yes, I ran through the modem/router from CenturyLink, which works fine by itself, and a lot of the information you mentioned was already pre-populated.

Actually bruce, I am wondering if I even need to cut the modem/router out of the loop when I go to try setting up the 8 port Netgear. If they are all connected together with the Netgear being the last in line, when I type in the IP number, it brings up the Netgear setup page.

At least he has a Netgear router. Some routers who knows if it will work. If he had a D-Link I would just throw it away.

Linksys configure nicely as well. They just fail too often. Can you tell I have a preference?

Boom,

Remind me again why the new modem/router isn't good enough by itself? Is it because its not located in the same spot as the Netgear?

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

I did buy the identical modem/router that CenturyLink rents. It is a 4 port and wireless ActionTec Q1000. I have disabled the wireless portion as I am on a wired network and I wanted to continue to use my 8 port Netgear Router as I have about 6 different things hooked to it.

here is the problem...........you either need to change that router's configuration to become a "switch" which is how you want to use it, or just go out and get a Network switchboard. I have a 16port switch in my house which connects to the router, and then finally the modem.

ask me why i need 16 ports, i dare you ..............

also someone here mentioned that you need to get to the router you are using as a MAIN, and confire it to PPPoE and enter the username and password.............

USUALLY 192.168.1.1 typed into your browser gets you access to your router, but NOT etched in gold.

any more issues, PM me.

if you lived close to me, i would come over and help, but you are a teeny weeny bit to far

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

It sounds like I would be turning the Netgear 8 port into a gigantic Switch? Back when I was on cable, I had a cable modem and a 4 port router. Because I needed more ports, I put in a 3 port Switch. A while ago that switch up and died. That's when I picked up the 8 port router to replace the both of them.

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

bruce and dolluper, I know I must sound like davem3 JR, with his 16 ports. He must be running some kind of boiler room operation.

I'm not that excessive but I do have my house wired for connections throughout. Those outlets exceed the capablity of the 4 port DSL modem router. I have all my starting connection spots in one location. Internet line in, modem, router, my two computers and the wall outlet for distribution throughout the house.

I got up in the attic and strung wires, then dropped them down through the walls, back when I was more adept at being like a monkey.

Well, with all the recently supplied links and information, I'd better get cracking. I want to get this issue put to bed so I can clear out all the reams of notes, spare parts and cables. Not to mention that I need to get under my main computer table and tie wrap up the new rats nest of cables a lines. Did I mention, I detest excess cableage all balled up and running hither and yon. Even if you don't see it regularly, I say it pollutes you mind!
