Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

Just kidding. Just spent 45 minutes on the telephone, with three different people, only to be told that it would cost me $75 to reconfigure my router to work with my new DSL modem. Needless to say, I am steaming.

Anyway, if anyone has any knowledge on this I would appreciate the hep.

I've been using this 8 port Netgear router on a cable modem for a while now. In fact, I am typing this through that router, still using my Comcast cable connection which I have not terminated yet.

I went to set up my new DSL modem which was successful as long as I had one computer connected directly to it. When I put the computer connection back on the router and hooked the new modem to the router, I get no internet. The DSL provider said I needed to contact the router provider to reconfigure it.

Is this something that anyone can help with? Why would it work through a Cable modem but not a DSL modem? I thought this was the age of Plug and Play?

Have you plugged your computer directly into the modem to make sure you have internet that way?

Most of the companies that sell modems also have step by step walk through tutorial on their websites on how to set them up on various configurations.

What brand and model of modem is it?

My DSL company didn't provide a combination modem/router, to get that I had to purchase my own, they provided a modem, I wanted a combo router/modem/wireless device, and the company I bought it from provided a step by step setup tutorial for my service provider for setup.

Just a wild *** guess but I think you need to access your router settings and change it to PPPoE and add you isp email and password and all will be well...I would google your router model # and pppoe setup...

Who is your ISP and what router do you have?

Some ISP's are setup to recognize only one computer. When you setup a router you add mulitple computers. Each network peripheral will have a MAC address that identifies it in a unique manner. You probably setup your modem from your pc and when it when through it's automated setup process it used the MAC address of your PC as the system that it would communicate with. Your router has a different MAC address so it's not seeing it. Most routers have a configuration setting to spoof the MAC of the PC that was used in setup.

On your computer, from a cmd line, type ipconfig/all. Look closely at the list that appears and find the network card of your PC. The MAC address will look something like 00-1F-D0-D3-92-8B. Copy that and then go to your router and in the setup you should find an option to use another MAC address for the router. Enter the PC's MAC address and then reset your router. During testing, you should disable your firewall but be sure to re-enable it and open the appropriate ports as needed when you're done.

Thanks All. With all this info I should be able to get it done today. It's just hard to understand how two different types of modems can sent their signals to the PC and they will both be read. You'd think that a router could simalarly take either modem signal and pass it on to multiple computers without having to jump through hoops. Obviously not!

I did buy the identical modem/router that CenturyLink rents. It is a 4 port and wireless ActionTec Q1000. I have disabled the wireless portion as I am on a wired network and I wanted to continue to use my 8 port Netgear Router as I have about 6 different things hooked to it.

I was going to tell you to go to dslreports.com but right now they are having some serious server problems so the site is down. It may not be up until next week. These folks there are the gurus of router configs.

Think of it like delivering mail. The mail may get to the post office but without a correct address it's just going to get returned. Computers are logical, they can't reason.

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

He doesn't want to set up his router to look for MAC addresses unless its for security reasons to keep unknown MAC addresses off his network which I think is a pain in the butt.

Boomyal, did you plug your computer into the new modem/router that you bought and does that work?

You are basically trying to connect a router to another router in order to use what you have existing. You have a couple choices if you do this. When you connect the old router to your new combo router, use a LAN to LAN connection. Don't use the LAN to WLAN or you will have to configure each router for different IP ranges.

If your old router is setup as a static IP to the outside world you need to change that setting to DHCP so that it can acquire an IP address from your new router. Yo may want to look at the instructions for your existing router to hook it up as a router connected to another router.

If the ISP is centurylink DSL then I promise you, you need to change your connection type to PPPoE in the router settings and enter the main email and password that the tech support can provide you with...I have the same ISP and I had to do the same thing...

I looked up your modem/router just now...disable the wireless broadcast in the modem, and set the router to PPPoE, Enter the email address and password, hit run, type cmd, type Ipconfig /release, type ipconfig /renew and you are good to go...

He of course needs to do this in his new router/modem...not his old router.

Won't hurt to do the ipconfig /release but I doubt he will have to if the current IP range is the same with the new router vs his old one.

It sounds to me like he wants to use his new modem/router combo as just a modem and connect to his old router...If that's the case and he is using century link then he needs to switch to pppoe in his old router...Its the exact same situation I was in when I switched from cox cable to centurylink DSL...The only difference is I flashed all my routers to dd-wrt mega builds so the settings are easier...

Whoa, wait...there's the problem, you are using 2 routers?
If so you need to the turn netgear into a hub, and let the ActionTec handle the DHCP.
You can't have 2 routers trying to do the same thing, (route all the traffic) on the same network

I have disabled the Wireless part of the ActionTec Q1000 modem router and removed the antennas. I do not know about this PPPoE thing. Century link did give me the PPP username, the PPP password, the Preferred DNS Server and the Alternate DNS server but they could not help me in the actual setup of the Netgear. They also gave me a VPI and a VCI number but never saw anyplace to use them in the router setup.

For the short term I gave up trying to get everything to work through my 8 port Netgear router and just plugged a few of the computers directly to the ActionTec modem/router. That is how I am operating now. Yesterday I canceled my Cable subscription and returned all the equipment so I cannot go back to it.

Yesterday before I canceled the cable, I did try to set up the netgear router, running through CenturyLink modem/router, but nothing worked. In the end it would not even work going back to the cable hookup. I had filled out some of the things they asked for in the router set up but it did not seem to take. But because I could not switch back to using it on the cable set up, I think it did change something.

I tried to follow the Netgear setup as shown in this link supplied by Piece715 but I think you are telling me that I need to change something else in the ActionTec Modem/router?

http://support.netgear.com/app/answ...ur-netgear-router-for-dsl-internet-connection

When I had the router connected to the ActionTec modem and typed in the 192.168.0.01, it went to the netgear setup. While I am only hooked up to the ActionTec modem/router, the same number takes me to the setup for it.

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

It sounds like the modem/gateway needs to be put into gateway mode.

You will need to be connected to the modem directly (do not use the router)
On the Actiontec Q1000

Log into your modem by entering the modem?s IP into the address bar of your browser (in my case, 192.168.0.1)
Click on Advanced Setup
Click on Wan IP
Select RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging
Save the Settings
instruction stolen from http://foxsys.blogspot.ca/2011/10/qwest-actiontec-q1000-in-rfc-1483.html

Once this is done , confirm you are able to connect to the internet.
Connect the router to the modem an test , it should work.

After you have it working , look into a custom firmware for the router.
(DD-WRT and Tomato are the 2 I use)

Good luck.

Re: Who wants to make $75?-Router Configuration!

Boomyal, I wasn't reading what you were writing carefully enough earlier to see that you do have internet connection.

Do a search "netgear router connected to another router" and you will come up with a lot of info on doing what you need to do. Don't do what I said earlier and have DHCP turned on your netgear router. You will need to have it configured as an access point and probably best to give it a static IP address so you can access it later. Give it a static IP like 192.168.1.1. If you don't give it a static IP the new router will assign it any IP address in its address range so you will have to go into the new router first to see what IP got assigned to it. Static IP will be much easier.

Try doing the following:
1) have your existing Netgear router only hooked up to one PC. Also not hooked up to the new router
2) Log into it at 192.168.1.0.
3) Go to your LAN IP setup and disable DHCP
4) Select LAN IP to be something other than 192.168.1.0. Try 192.168.1.99. It needs to be an IP that is not already assigned by the new router.
5) Disconnect your PC and connect your Netgear router to your new router. Do not use the WLAN port(I actually get conflicting info on this step. Some people say to use the WLAN port)
