Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

as much as people are selling trailers for around here, you bet it stays locked up, except when it's parked in the garage for the night.

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

I have never once locked mine in any way. In many years of boating, I've also never heard of a stolen boat/trailer in my area. (keep in mind that I've occassionally forgotten to close my garage door when I go to work, and the house is unlocked... Thank god for a crime rate next to zero!)

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

so here we go again--someone has to see his situation as everyone's situation, and call anyone who does things differently ignorant. FTR I don't lock mine, to answer the question directly. But I don't use public ramps much. And I am hardly ignorant when it comes to boating.

read his comment again. he's talking about the person doing the stealing as being ignorant.

you jumped the gun.

back to the topic. my tandem is too heavy to move, but i do keep it hooked up with a locking pin.

Trailer for the boat, and my utility trailers are both locked. I never thought about being able to remove the nut off of the ball. Guess I could have it welded. Hmmmmm......

Given this person's recent posting history, I would not come to same conclusion as you.

Or if you run a fancy reciever like I've got then there is no nut ;) My receiver is actually locked to the truck, but that is because I do park the truck downtown and $150 recievers tend to walk away.

Around here people don't even take the keys out of the boat when they are docked.

I don't lock my trailer at the launch ramp. I suppose it could get stolen but it seems like that would be more trouble than its worth.

I lock my Hitch and Trailer, The ball may be hard to remove without the right tools. If a thief really wonted your trailer he would have it! A lock keeps honest people honest..

Well, yes, mine is locked. Not concerned so much about theft as some smart-alec kid popping the latch for a joke. ;)

royal, you stole my thunder. Not only kids but other goof balls wanting to get their kicks may flip the trailer latch or pull the clip pin on the receiver. There's already a check list a mile long to assure the boat is secure, lights and brakes working and everything battened down before starting out on the road. Having to make sure to check the receiver pin is still in there and the trailer latch hasn't been tampered with are just additional things to try and remember. I'd hate to look out the rearview mirror watching the trailer going by-by and wondering what may have happened. I guess my thoughts are aimed more at safety vs theft.

What stops em from removing the nut and taking the ball? Guess you could weld it on..Wouldn't be better to lock the safety chain to the truck?

My safety chains are bolted to the trailer so they are more easily removed than the hitch ball. I'd have to weld both chains and ball to improve my security.
I do lock the hitch and receiver at all times.

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

Mine always has a lock on it. Then again, many times the lock clasp isn't latched, and when it is, I never take the keys out of the truck, so I suppose it isn't all that secured. I probably should do more, but I tend to trust people too much. Guess I'd rather see the good in people, stupid as it may be.

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

I have a lock on my hitch reciever and trailer tongue hitch... just to keep honest people honest while my truck and trailer are parked at the launch.

Does anyone not bother with these?

:facepalm:I'm going to take your side on this one:facepalm: Locks are meant to keep honest people honest. If they really want your trailer (or anything for that matter) they will get it, lock or not!

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

Mine is allways locked and there is a also a mini lock on the receiver pin but I store my boat in the driveway. We've had some car breakins in the neighborhood so just feel safer with things locked. Have heard that some kids will put their own lock on your trailer if the wife happens to miss the lines when parking. Not sure why they do that, seems childish to me but I'm hearing of it happening.

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

I have a locking "pin" through the receiver into the hitch, BUT the nut to the ball is just tightened on, not welded. Guess I can remedy that !!! ;)

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

My pin to the reciever hitch is a locking pin and I also lock the trailer to the hitch ball. However one area of weakness is the reciever ball itself, it's only bolted onto the hitch. That really doesn't provide much security.

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

Can you imagine returning to the launch to find that your tow vehicle no longer has a trailer???... who would be that ignorant???:confused::confused:

That never happened to me with the boat however it did happen with a snow mobile trailer. Good thing we had a truck and picked them up and put them in the back. It was a tighht sqeeze but we made it.

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

One of the first things I ever read when I got a boat was some pranksters unhooking trailers as prank on their buddies.... didn't turn out to be funny for one of them. Mine came with a lock and is always engaged when the boat leaves my property.

Parked on my driveway or at the local ramp my hitch always has a lock on it. Three bucks of security against the opportunist... anything else hopefully the insurance covers!!!

Re: Who doesn't secure their trailer?

I lock mine and the reciever hitch. We have had a rash of trailer thefts around here lately, even the junk trailers, I suppose their selling them for scrap. I have the ball welded also. I agree though that if a person wants it bad enough their going to get it. I once lost the key to the hitch lock and had it sawed off in less than a minute with a hacksaw.
