Re: Which Jet Ski Motor&Pump for Boat Install?

I had a 90 hp 3 cyl regal with the mercury jet, that boat was so awfull to drive that it was what started me on the quest for steering improvements, after the steering was added I loved the boat,I actually have a video of it on my web site, going through a slolom course, there are a lot of older jet boats around but in his situation, I would build an air boat with flip up steering rudders to have more controll, Or do a radical mod on a jet pump with a tunnel hull and do away with the impeller and use a air prop with no forcing cone or steering nozzle and use a rudder system like I did on my jet boat, but that is just me.

Re: Which Jet Ski Motor&Pump for Boat Install?

I did'nt read the whole conversation about the jet ski motor and pump install in a small boat BUT............I have one and it is awesome I fish around very shallow, rocky, swift water in Alabama and this is the best way to run the river. It tops out @ 32 mph if I put a higher pitch prop on it I beleive it would run 40 mph. You do'nt let go if I turn very hard because it will throw you out !!!! my boat is a 14' lowe 48" bottom.I now know that this boat will run in water more shallow than it can float in.if you are gonna build one my advice is use a boat that has a vee bottom but is still wide, the vee bottom will stop cavitation in white capping rapids but you can still run a flat bottom I do. all you do is feather the throttle and it will catch up and set you back in the seat again.By the way take off is unreal in mine.I used a 750cc kawasaki motor and pump.I'm gonna build another and it will have a bigger motor and prop and also trim.Good luck if you have any questions email me I'll get it quicker that way.

imfishingto@yahoo.com

Need a different slant on the problem ? Look up the Australian race jet boats. Those people are VERY helpfull and very sucessful at all jet boats. Share good and bad freely. I will try and get some sites for you.--------------add on--------------Rock runner sounds experienced about flat bottoms. -----------add on-------------web search ------race jet boats. Keep you busy and expand your knowledge of them. Ask ask ask. And you will learn to seperate weeds from seeds.

OH, remember all the thrust is from the pump housing. It will flex and crack the thin aluminum skin in nothing flat. A severe change to the inside transom board is mandatory and plate on the outside also. Pictures to Rock Runner of the stern inside and outside would really help. Ask Rock for some pictures. Best way to understand. A small aluminum boat and a pump are WILLLD. :)

One of the most important things about driving a VACUME CLEANER is if you turn at a high speed and lose contact with the water, bye bye. There is NOTHING to stop the boat from doing air work till the suction is established again. That is why the deep V is so important. You have to be a idiot in choppy water to lose the suction in a turn. They are the biggest cornering high you will ever get. :)

Otterbfishing,
actual I have seen several of these done when I was living in Ga the river up there had deep spots and shollow where we crossed maybe 2' deep sandbars the old yamaha's are the best in my opion the hole pump houseing can be remove and fitted to your john boat. the weight of the hull your talking about useing is simular or maybe even lighter.
I have two yamaha wave jammers I had been keeping to do a dual motor/pump boat for myslef but am going to sell now $650 for the one with the rougher looking hull and $975 for the one hat goes to the beach every weekend but I am down in Fl and thats probally to far for you to drive :)

Ok.. I'm back.
Otto, I have added a few picks of my setup.
The backside of the XP seadoo has been used with a 6mm aluminium transom stiffener. I agree with the last few posts about hull stress and have solved the problem. I run a 720cc Rotax in a 3.0m Aluminium tinnie. Still in the "how did I get out of that roll alive" faze but every tweek seems to get better. I live on the Broadwater in Surfers Paradise and on a calm day can sit about 8mm in the water and clock 60mph... just a buzz.

All,

First of all this forum is great, good folks and a ton information.
I don't post much but read alot.

Why not adapt the Jet Ski as a detachable pod ?
Don't cut up your boat, cut up the ski.
Fab a bulkhead matching your transom, bonded to ski cut forward of the engine and intake grate.
Add transom clamps.
Bond foam to ski hull....cut with hot wire to match boat contour and fiberglass.
Adapt tiller control and an additional articulated rudder for better steering.
Have the jet attachment for shallow water and the ability to use a standard outboard.
Probably have to modify boat slighty to be able to cinch up the bottom of the "pod" instead of relying on transom clamps only.

Any other ideas...suggestions ?

Bill

If anyone is still following this thread, I have a "jetski Jon boat" that I bought from a guy who builds them in Idaho. It has amazing control, can do about 45mph, and works great as a powerdrifter. Id be willing to get some photos for anyone interested.
