Where to find serial #

I have an 85 century with a 5.7 mercruiser 260 hp where do I look to find serial #s or ID #s and such

Look for a metal tag just above where the starter bolts to the block

there is one on the carb with some #s could that be it? Is there any specific amount of #s or letters on it?

That tag is for the carb, not the engine. Look on the engine where I mentioned above, that is the Mercruiser engine SN and basically tells your dealer what you have.
