This is your basic kill switch and lanyard, it's nothing more than a toggle switch. When the lanyard pulls the small plastic loop out of the switch it flips the toggle down. To restart the boat flip the toggle switch up and crank the engine, you don't have to reinsert the loop and lanyard for the boat to start... just flip the switch.

Jig, your set up is not like that on the four boats/motors I have that have a kill switch lanyard, nor ahve I seen one like it on my friends and family's boats (which tend to be old). On my four and others I know, there is a clip that is yanked loose. Once it's gone, you can't restart the engine and keep it running (although I need to test my newer boat for restart).

I like your switch system b/c it solves the "missing clip" issue that can occur in many ways (including a broken clip). But in my experience it's not typical, so those looking for information here should refer to their own set-up.

I carry a lanyard that has 5 or so clips for all brands on it, so I can help out other boaters.

Until this thread, I didn't even know there was an electronic kill switch available. I always think "I should wear the tether" when I'm on the water, but never do.

Now that I have looked at the Autotether, I'm not sure I have an excuse.

For anyone that hasn't at least looked at the site, it is worth looking at it:

This unit ADAPTS to the current kill switch on most boats. The existing switch does not need to be changed. The Autotether unit just has a little electronic actuator that trips the switch if/when it needs to. The old string tether could be put back on in a matter of 0.5 seconds if/when the Autotether should fail.

There are a couple online retailers that are selling them for far less than MSRP.

That isn't the same exact one that's on my boat either, mine is built into my Quicksilver throttle/shifter on my '97 Tracker. Mine does have the little toggle switch though and the boat can be operated without the lanyard.

I bought a spare lanyard and it came with a bunch of different "keys" too, but I cut them all off except the one I needed... guess I should've left them on in case someone was stranded.

I don't know why they don't make those kind of things universal and standard.

Because of the mess of our US patent system. The shape of the killswitch itself has a couple patents behind it, so for one mfg to use another design for a kill switch, they are most likely violating at least one patent.

I just checked my Tahoe and and safety switch will stay toggled up without the safety 'tab/key' in place. glad to know that.

Thanks for that info. I never thought about the fact that one just needs to flip up the switch to start the O/B. My wife always seems to have issues with getting the switch down and putting the clip in. I know what she means. I have to wiggle the tip of the clip to get it to flip down so I can put the lanyard clip in.
Good to know that we don't need the clip to get it started in an emergency. I'd hate to be shouting out instructions to her as I'm floating down the river

That is what I was saying about the ones on my boats. You can just flip the toggle switch into the up position and restart the motor if you need to. The toggle switch is kind of hard to see in the picture but it is just under the part that sticks out at the top in the picture.
