Hi again;

When using the nut and washer to knock out rear seal, I noticed the sleeve where the rear seal rides was loose and came off with the seal. All the others were not loose. Also this was the only one that had any evidense of water. I bought this trailer new and it has not needed spidle work, so I think these sleeves are original equipnent. I will include pictures as soon as my phone transfers them to my laptop.

My feeling is this sleeve should be sealed onto the spindle?

Also I damaged the little spring inside the seal while removing it. I think if i remove the hub, remove the spring then knock out the seal, it would not damage the spring. To bad I didn't think of that before I bent them all out of shape. How do you identify these seals as there aren't any numbers on them.

Advice gladly accepted....

Never a good idea to re-use seals. Buy new ones plus a few extra ones, they are cheap

What you are likely looking at there is a Speedi-Sleeve added by a previous owner to repair the damaged sealing surface.
They are not original to the axle.
They are usually pressed on, but if the original surface is extremely worn, they may be loose.
A little adhesive under them should hold them in place.

The seal itself is a one time item.
You WILL destroy them if you remove them.
And the only reason to remove them is to replace them.
Time to replace! Very inexpensive, well under $10 at any auto parts store. Take the old one for comparison.

I don't think this trailer has had any work done to it. I am familiar with Speedy Sleeves.

I'm wondering if the manufacturer put them on to save the spindles?

Are you saying the axle manufacturer put them on to avoid scrapping a batch of axles that were machined out of spec from day one?
Are saying you have Speedy-Sleeves on a brand new trailer?

Speedi Sleeves Are standard on Shoreland'r trailers. If the sleeve is not damaged, clean both surfaces really good, apply LocTite Red, and re-install. You can re-assemble hub, but Do Not put into service until it's sat overnight.

If the sleeves have grooves, worn by the seal, they should be replaced. Heat will remove the sleeves that are still glued on.

Thanks snow. I just received an email from the dealer and he said the same thing. Speedi-Sleeve are standard equipment on Shorland'r trailers.
Thanks for the loctite tip as I wasn't sure what to use....

You may want to consider replacing all the sleeves. See that groove caused by the seal? By doing all sleeves, seals, & bearing service, you have a new trailer again. Might as well since you're down there.

Sleeves can be heated gently, with a torch, to release the factory LocTite. Should be able to wipe the hot LocTite off with a rag. Then some light sanding, brake clean, and some LocTite Red on the sleeve & spindle. Slightly rotate the sleeve, when installing, to distribute the LocTite. Wipe off the excess and move on to the next spindle.

By the time, that you're done with the last spindle, the first will be ready to install the hub. Again, don't rotate the wheel for 24 hours. Got to let the LocTite fully cure.

Won't be long and us northerners will be on the water!

Re: Wheel bearing greasing

This is what I did last weekend. This weekend it looks pretty much the same. I think its going to be a while till we're on the Red River this year. They're forcasting moderate to severe flodding this year and I suspect they wont put the docks in till mid June.:blue: We got it out and its in the nice warm shop.

I put Captain's Call exhaust on and am installing a Rosswell wake tower, so this is torture waiting:mad-new:

Hopefully it will warm up soon....
