If you want trout, use minnies! If they're in there, they'll bite on minnies

Re: what's your favorite bass bait

favorite bait would come to play on the conditions you are fishing.....hard to fish a crank when you are fishing mats or padded areas....and so on.....What works in bob's pond may not work in Jim's pond....one could be gin clear water and one may be a jungle under the water and stained....when you find what works..use it....

Re: what's your favorite bass bait

I always decide what I'm going to use right before heading out. Normally I'll always have a rod with a spinnerbait, crankbait, bass jig, spinnerbait, shakeyhead, and depending on what mood I'm in either a texas/carolina rig or just a bass hook on the other for a senko or floating worm. Where I'm at and where I'm sitting are the ultimate deciding factor on what my favorite bait is for that given moment.

In our local bass pond we like topwaters in the morning and evening. They seem to stop biting top water in the afternoon so we switch to senkos.Like everyone is saying its different bait for different locations sometimes.Helps keep it interesting right !

I caught my biggest bass while crappie fishing with a live minnow under a slip bobber. But I my all around bass bait is a 8" plastic worm texas rigged. On rocky bottoms, you can't beat a big Chompers with a jig head.

I have found a terrific jig trailer. I use frozen squid for catfish bait. A squid head with all their tentacles makes an awesome trailer. Amazing action and creates a scent trail as well!

I have used lures such as floating minnows, rooster tails, buzzbaits etc., but the last few years me and the wife have done well with live minnows and sometimes live worms...sometimes on top with a small float and sometimes on bottom. Works well at the lakes we frequent. Plus as a bonus you will occasionally get a nice channel cat or crappie. That being said, we will be fishing much deeper water next year so will be trying a variety of lures.

I do enjoy the strike on a top water. Zera Spooks, Jitterbugs, Hula Poppers, white Booyah Buzz baits are my top waters. Carolina rigged watermelon color lizards work well too. For jig and spinnerbait trailers I like to use a squid head. Awesome action and a scent trail to boot. I use the squid bodies for striper and channel cat bait. Very tough and stays on the hook.

Green pumpkin jig with a watermelon trailer. Topwater frog around grass is like playing a video game. Try the Rage Toad's around wood or grass, you'll have a blast when the topwater bite is on.

You're not gonna believe this but I went out to do some catfishing with shrimp soaked in garlic salt and low and behold I caught nothing but bass! Here is what I did with the shrimp. I went to Wal-Mart and bought some jumbo shrimp, took it home and put them in a large zip-lock bag. Emptied a small bottle of garlic salt in it and shook the bag really good. I then put the bag outside for about 8 hrs in the sun. Put the bag in the freezer and went out to fish the next day. I caught 12 bass ranging from 3lbs to 7lbs. I was totally shocked because I did not catch any cats. What's up with that?

Nuther vote here for Senkos. As long as it's rigged straight (when not wacky rigging) there is no wrong way to fish it. Fast, slow, steady retrieve, jerky retrieve, just laying on the bottom doing nothing, it all works. They're great for smallmouth and largemouth.

But the top water guys are right. Nothing is more exciting than that bass exploding on your lure from out of nowhere. Just don't set the hook immediately, fish seem to need an extra second to get the lure all the way in their mouth before you set the hook. Someone told me once when top water fishing, you need to bow to the fish before you set the hook.

My old reliable is a baby bass color Stik-0-Worm. It's the Bass Pro Shop version of the Senko. I like them because they are more durable. Like the previous poster said, there is no wrong way to fish them.
My Wife catches all of her fish with a pumpkin green Cut Tail worm. The problem with these is that they are very soft and bream love to bite the tails off of them, and then they are useless.
But I have to admit that my biggest fish have been caught with Raplala floating minnows and top water poppers.

A dark purple plastic worm (with or without a nose weight) has proven to be an old reliable for me. In a lake or on the coast. I always keep one in the tackle box.

purple worm - texas rigged - 1/8 oz bullet weight - pegged with a toothpick -
won many tournaments with this rig when others couldn't get a bite.

Hard to say there but me and the wife sometimes go to a smaller lake that has bass that go for hot dog weiners....It is not a large lake, in fact it is more of a large pond. When the local lakes are muddy we go there to fish from the banks for bluegill and catfish, but always catch a few bass as well. Since there are a lot of picnic there I guess hot dogs get used for bait and they are just used to them. Usually don't catch them anywhere else like that though...Although I did catch a nice 16" one on shrimp at Stonewall Jackson Lake a couple of years ago. Shrimp are kind of related to crawfish and bass do love them.
