hi, my 99 200 evinrude has just started this. in the morning when i start it i have full power. when it warms up after a few min it starts to sputter. like its only running on 5 cylinders. and sometimes it will run fine. anyone know if they thinks its the carb? and also its a 2 stroke, it has recently started a blue oil smoke. is that cause its not getting the proper fuel and oil mixture? thanks.

Re: whats wrong with my engine?

Might be your stator starting to act up. Running ok on the quick start power coil, then looses out when quick start is disengaged.
Measure the stator output with a DVA meter.

When it's acting up, do a cyl drop test on it to find out which cyl/s are not firing.

Hi. I'm kinda new to this. But what's a stator?

Stator is part of the ignition system. It generates the charge that eventually fires through the spark plug. When the stator starts to fail, it can cause weak or no spark.

Ignition components in general are prone to behaving badly when they warm up. Things begin to expand, and can ground out or short circuit. Bad when you are trying to move electricity.

If it is dropping one cylinder, after Quick Start switches and the engine drops to normal idle the timer base is bad. check with meter, same time you check stator and pack.

Now is a good time to ckeck the magnets in the flywheel, and the screws holding the upper main bearing housing. Flywheel need not be removed for this.

Will it cause not to fire at all or sporadicly. Cause I can run it then sometimes after killing the engine I choke it to rev up the engine. Sometimes I can't get it over 4 thousand rpm. And then I would run for awhile and kill it and it would go almost to 7. Thanks. Oh. And if it is my stator how can I tell or check it? Thanks.

Thank you. A few people say it maybe the stator? So it prob isn't the carberator or fuel problem.

Re: whats wrong with my engine?

I had a similar problem with a 87 rude 150. Fire it up at the dock, put on plane and within 30 seconds to 1.5 minutes it would bog and come off plane. Sit at idle for a few minutes and finally start hitting on all six and would normally run good the rest of the day. Finally got it to fail on muffs one day and started pulling plug wires to see what was not firing. Found all three cylinders on left side was not firing. Switched power packs from one side to the other and problem switched to right side. Replaced power pack and have not had a problem since.

Well, try this. When your engine starts running rough, try either pumping the primer bulb (if your motor has one) or try spraying premix directly into the carb throat. If things smooth out, you may have a fuel delivery problem which can be carbs, or can be your fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel tank, etc and needs systematic troubleshooting.

My gut would tell me you are not having a fuel problem, but rather an ignition problem. An easy way to check if its ignition vs fuel is when your motor starts sputtering and acting up, slap a timing light on the plug wires and see if you are getting steady spark.

Power pack meaning the coils or the whole top brain piece? Thanks. Some people are saying its the stator. What you think about that?

Re: whats wrong with my engine?

It can be any of the ignition components; stator, trigger, power pack, coils, spark plugs, switches, etc. The only way to tell is to test the components methodically. Go to the CDI Electronics website and look through their troubleshooting guide. It will tell you how to troubleshoot your ignition components to diagnose the misbehaving component.

Re: whats wrong with my engine?

Have a look at the total ignition system, and be methodical.
1: You have the stator with its power coils which charges up the capacitor in the power pack.
If not charging as needed, capacitor will not be fully charged between firing and you will have weak spark or intermittent spark.
2: Trigger/sensor that tells when to fire to which cylinder. The trigger, if not mistaken sends a double pulse to the power pack. When in cold start modus, power pack reacts on the first pulse, when in normal temp modus, power pack fires on second pulse. if running ok in cold start but not normal, trigger/sensor may be faulty.
2: Power pack reacts on signals and charge from stator and trigger/sensor. In addition you have the cold start temp switch, the shift interrupt switch, the stop circuit and the alarm circuit that may act up.
In cold start modus, a speed limiter is activated cutting ignition pulses at RANDOM to keep the rpm steady at about 1100 rpm.
The shift switch cuts out stb cylinder bank when shifting.
The alarm switch(es) cuts one bank, above around 3000 rpm, the stop cuts all.
However I've seen power packs 'locking' up in the most strange ways. SLOW stays on even with no grounded alarm switch and it may even cut at random like still in cold start without the limiter active.
As a general rule when fault searching strange phenomena, start from the beginning, the stator and work through every component. Output tests overrules any static Ohm test.

Thank you. Ima start trying. Hopefully its something simple.
