Saco, Maine :<br /><br />Tuesday and Wednesday saw the coldest (with wind chill) in five years (-10F to -30F) :( . Busted pipes broken boilers and water mains abound. I run a plumbing and heating company www.maineheat.com and we got a call from Maryland today from a lady wondering what to do about her frozen pipes. She told my wife "I figured you guys in Maine would know how to deal with something like this". Trouble is most of the houses in Maryland just aren't insulated enough for the type of weather that is being thrown at us.

This may sound a little funny to you but It was 17 Deg. this morning when I got up!<br /><br />SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO you say....I live in FLORIDA.<br /><br />The high in the woods where I was at reached a whoopen 48 Deg. today.<br /><br />Wind Chill this morning was 10 Deg.<br /><br />I've been in the sun too long to be chippen ice off my flavor savor!<br /><br />I left the water runnen last night and tonight so as not to freeze the pipes.<br /><br />They actually called off school in flaglar Co. (witch is a little north of me)....Wimps!<br /><br />The Guy that works for me said he was'nt going to get out of the truck in that kinda weather and work....too cold....something about employee rights.<br /><br />"Fine" I said "you just sit right in the truck and I'll get out and find the Property corners....Fair enough?".....He says "yea!" and smiled while pulling his hat down over his eyes.<br /><br />So I pulled up under a shady tree....cross ways to the wind....Powered down all the windows in the truck....grabed the keys....opend up the hatch and went to finden corners.<br /><br />After a minute of that, getting a little exercise useing the shovel and machette in the sun light seemed to be his primary goal....I like being the boss sometimes!<br /><br />Bigmeanywood.

Here in Longview, Wa yesterday it was clear, sunny, and in the mid 50's. I took my golden retriever for a walk on the sand beach of the Columbia River near here, and danged if there wasn't a slight breeze and I had to put a long sleeve shirt on over my T-shirt. We have to put up with a lot here.<br /><br />But after living on the north shore of Lake Huron for the last ten years, I have come up with the following maxim: Any weather you do not have to shovel is good weather!

It was 17 degrees on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. It would have probably cracked some of you guys up that it was the lead story on all of the local news about how cold it was going to get. All kinds of advice on how to keep from freezing to death.

Jan. 25 and it's 13 degrees along the banks of the great Ohio River. As with many families, cold weather spawns gettogethers and my outfit is no different. Night before last I suggested to her herself that a crock pot full of beans might be in order. So she said sounded good. I take pride in my beans. Using only the best ham and onions. Right before serving I add bunches of bite size drop dumplings to round out the pot. This along with cornbread and fried potatoes makes a very good meal for a cold day. It also draws to the kitchen siblings with their families and a few friends that herself invites. So it was last night. Everyone enjoying the fare that I laid out. Afterwards, a beer or two and good converstation......and flatulance. It ranged from the thunderblast variety to squeakers. And the odiferous odors that loomed in the air from the constant breeching. It could have been -50 outside and no one would have cared. The doors came open. I'm still suffering the after effects of the evening. Ahhhhh cold weather. Bringing family and friends together.

39 degrees right now fish pond frozen over except the waterfall coming in off the upper pond, pool frozen over solid maybe enough to ice skate on (LOL) and I am gonna stay inside and watch TV all day sipping coffee because I still feel cold from being out yesterday morning in 16 degree weather. This is not how it is supposed to be here. I should be getting the fly rod and heading out after some warmouth, bream, perch and bass but instead of enjoying the nice sunny day I am staying out of the cold. (BTW gonna be in the 50's again soon which is more like it)

Saanichton BC. We're having a really mild winter here... it was 42 last night and it's expected to reach 55 today. We've had a fair bit of rain recently but we need it because of a drought summer we just had (the main water reservoir is low). It's foggy and calm this morning.

Warming up good here in north-east Nebraska - should be up to 25 today. Was -17 actual temp Thursday morning... -35 wind chill. Such is winter here in the upper midwest: Spring frog-strangler thunderstorms, early Summer tornadoes and base-ball sized hail, late summer 105 degree/95% humidity, Autumn pollen that could choke a horse, and 15' of snow with sub-zero temps in the winter. The people in this neck of the woods are a tough bunch. I'll take cold over heat any day... you can always put ON another piece of clothing, but there's only so much you can take OFF, in good taste.

Actually had to go out and brave the cold the wife was in a shopping mood. Sign on a local fly/tackle shop said "Get your Ice fishing supplies here". I think we may be in for a cold winter if this feeps up 38 degrees right now so above freezing and it's night sounds like it may warm up.

Well, it's 27F right now with a wind chill of 18 with the wind blowing at, lets see, about 9 from the west southwest.<br />Coldest it's been here in my part of the country for some time, as far as any extended period of time.<br />Oh sure, we have a day ever now and again that it gets down in the single digits, but no like it has done this winter.<br />The woolly worms were right on it this year.

Your lucky Outboard Jim, I live real close to a place called Oppossum Run. Lowest part in Ohio. When it is 10 degrees in the surrounding counties, it is -0 or below here. There is only 4 places on this earth that has lake effect snow. Why do I live in one of them? There has been white stuff on the ground since November. YUK! <br /><br />During that cold blast, Alaska was actually warmer than the rest of the eastern seaboard! Here we had Single digets to the minus marks. And of course that is when heating and refrigeration units go down. Spent most of the week on the roofs of McDonalds knee deep in the snow and cold.<br /><br />I have been watching the weather in Washington State. That just might be a better place to live than here. At least as far as weather goes.<br /><br />My special thanks goes out to the makers of LONG JOHNS! :D

Re: What's the weather like in your neck of the woods?

I never knew much about cold weather until I was aboard a ship delivering some equipment to McMurdoo Station in the Anarctic some years ago. I had heated up a pot of coffee and accidently let it boil. I sat it outside for just a minute to cool it off and it was frozen solid. It froze so fast that the ice was still warm!<br />[ I like to tell this story to my grandchildren when they say it's too cold. Too bad I can't work "going to school" into it too].

Re: What's the weather like in your neck of the woods?

In my youth when delivering fuel oil with a DC-3 to settlements near Hudson's Bay to get our morning bacon and eggs at the base camp "Cookie" would request a volunteer to go and unfreeze the propane tank for the stove. Take the Tiger Torch and let the flames lick the bottom of the tank until there was a flow. -45. That winter I lost my tolerance of the cold.
