Ouch -- this one's tough, but if you're faced with delaminated stringers, you should get a new boat. No patchwork bond you make will be as strong as the original one between the stringers and hull -- and that bond has already proved insufficient. Properly fixing it would mean your boat would be out of the water for a month, and the labor bill would be huge. Even then, there would be no guarantee the bond wouldn't fail the first time you get on plane. It's a classic case of throwing good money after bad. Time to hit the boat show.

Got this in my email in Iboats "this month in review". Kind of a shot at us guys fixing our boats a little, isn't it?

A totally uninformed opinion.

I agree. The author should have read this forum before stating an opinion.

You would think that the author of the article would have done a little resarch, I mean it's right on the same site that he's writing for. Obviously this forum wouldn't be half of what it is if these repairs weren't feasible.....

Re: What's Iboats trying to say?

what isn't shown is the context of the question.
Most boat owners aren't capable of this level of repair.

I wouldn't be able to own a boat if not for websites such as this, paying someone to fix my stringers is out of the question.

Content without context is a pretext to a textproof.!

This article was on another Boating Forum I was cruising on yesterday. I'm not sure which one it was. It was written by someone wanting to sell boats. I assume the dealership or Boat manufacturer was really hurting for sales so the writer was trying to discourage people from repairing major problems. Just buy new. The article I remember listed five things not to repair, but just go buy a new boat. Hey when times are tough if they can get a few suckers. The writers they have earned their keep.

Re: What's Iboats trying to say?

The article was written By Lenny Rudow, Boating Magazine.
This guy definitely would be torn to shreds on the forum!
Can't say that I agree with the bulk of his dribble.

There is a link on the bottom of the page to subscribe for anyone interested.

Hey guys Im all for fixing stuff pationate about it. I think what the author was trying to say, is sometimes cost outways the repair also if the origional design failed the repair could also. not so sure he was trying to diss anyone.
In any case I have seen some amazing workmanship here beyond belif keep up the great work.

Re: What's Iboats trying to say?

He is right in the following quote:

"No patchwork bond you make will be as strong as the original one between the stringers and hull"

It will be much stronger!!! Not only can you repair this, you can make it much better than it was originally.

The angle the writer may be working, is for a non DIY'er. Sending a boat out to have that repair done, may not be worth it, especially for an older boat.

Have a great day,

Rob.

The writers they have earned their keep.

Ayuh,... I gotta Disagree with That,......

In My Honest Opinion,......

Lenny Rudow Lost any sense of creditibility by passing off his Opinion as a Fact......
"No patchwork bond you make will be as strong as the original one between the stringers and hull"

That statement is simply Not the Truth.....

I donno iboat's relationship to Boating Magazine, nor how iboats finds their content for the monthly "iboat's review"...
But I'd think that I'd try a different tact for selling new boats than alienating the 100,000 or so forum readers who, no doubt are Buying stuff from iboats.com.....

I would think that there should be a pow-wow,+ this should be pointed out to Bruno, or whomever,...
To Fix this miscalculated blunder....

Again,... Just My honest opinion....

Re: What's Iboats trying to say?

i dont like the comment.. yah so maybe sometimes its not as strong but its not about that.. its about being able to take your boat apart and fix it yourself. get it to where its suppose to be. with the help of everyone on the this forum. . i dont think i would buy a new one.. i like the challenge of fixing the older ones.. and i love the fact that i can post a question on here and within 30 mins i can get an answer.. but the real thing is just doing it yourself.. being proud and go out on the boat and feel the deck solid and think to yourself i built it that way

Re: What's Iboats trying to say?

Some people are just consumers and well-heeled or not, their houses are cared for, manicured lawns, clean car interiors, and pay you to paint their extra room twice because the first color they picked wasn't quite just right....

These people just buy new stuff cuz they have MDS- Manufacturing Dependency Syndrome.

That writer was either addressing that audience and/or likely has MDS himself :)

Re: What's Iboats trying to say?

Lighten up, guys.

iboats didn't write that, nor did anyone directly associated with iboats. It was written some time ago for Boating Magazine and directed at typical boaters. We aren't typical boaters, but most of the Review readers (over 100,000) are.

If you think this one difference of opinion (or error, if you insist) is so important, why not write an article addressing the same issues and submit it to the Review? If you are worried about your writing skills, send it to me and I will gladly edit it for you.
