the main ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil...

No, there is NO fish oil in WD40... just a myth

http://www.wd40.com/about-us/myths-legends-fun-facts/

What a Fish story!
Myth: WD-40 contains fish oil.
Fact:
Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie?, it just ain?t so.

WD-40 Company has taken steps to respect and conserve the environment, and encourages its users to do the same. While WD-40 can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40 to attract fish.

yea, I am against using wd-40 as well, we have enough stuff in our fresh water resivoirs to worry about as it is. look at it at my point of view, (check out my occupation on my profile), we have fish kills every year and everyone acts surprised.
ex. 1 drop of wd 40 in a million drops of water would be 1 part per million right.
say the average fisherman sprayed his hook, bait etc. with 6 drops of wd 40
thats 6 parts per million per million drops of water
now there are 6 drops in a teaspoon,
768 teaspoons in a gallon
so 4,608 drops in a gallon
still with me

so if everyone at at your lake was using wd 40 to fish with everyday, everycast, at a 100 cast a day, how long would it take to screw up the lake.

I am at not saying wd 40 is causing fish kills, but lets not add to the problem any more then we have to
and the main ingredient to wd 40 is not fish oil. wd 40 is not patented so they dont have to disclose the "secret ingredient"
the 50% ingredient is mineral spirits, described as kerosene and thats enough for me to try my best to keep that chit out of the water (our drinking supply)

Afraid that math is a little off. You're assuming 6 drops onto a lure. No one can put that much on a lure especially with a spray can. Typical can is only 5.5 oz or .04 gal and the great majority of that is propellant. Typical can would only contain only enough for 30 casts at the 4608 drops per gal rate and it was all wd-40. Typical can lasts an angler a couple seasons.

Yes a typical can will pollute ONE gallon of water but what lake contains one gallon of water? A "pond" that is 200ft x 100 ft x 10 ft deep contains roughly 1.5 million gallons of water. (231 cu in per gal) Additionally if the main ingredient is kerosene, it shouldn't mix very well with water. In fact it'll float & evaporate.

I'm surprised that nobody has taken the two stroke motor angle. What puts more oil into the water, a poorly tuned 30 year old 2 stroke motor or a small can of WD-40?

I really don't know the answer for sure but I'd bet it's the motor.

Ain't that the truth...

Oh and what about the Trillions of gallons of oil that went down with all the WWI and WWII ships?

I say ban all 2 stroke and all wars with countries that use ships... yeah, that's the ticket... (said jokingly so as not to upset those not stable enough to handle this thread)

I will continue to use fish scenting OIL on my salmon lures... until they ban that stuff... Then maybe I'll just dunk it in fish blood...

Hahaha! Can't believe this thread is still going with over 1,100 views. I have not been around for awhile!

21 days left to Jan and another 28 days in Feb and hoping for another early Splash Down in March. Looking back I had a season opener on 3/20/2010.

Right now it's 21 degrees outside up here in the North East  I'm just biding my time and occasionally, I can be seen moving out from under the electric blanket for a dash to the fridge for another beer and back under the blanket :D

Tick Tock Tick Tock . . .
