How are you securing that transom in place? Too many times I've seen a structural member (transom in this case) butted to another member and relying only on glass & resin for the bond.

Cdx it is then, i picked oak because of its stringth.

No, no, no. I think bond-o was trying to make a point by saying even cheap ol CDX would be stronger than.... He certainly wasn't suggesting using CDX to construct your transom. At least I hope not. Please do NOT use CDX plywood for your transom.

CDX is the lowest grade plywood you can get. The wood species and the glue isn't suited for use in boat repair. You get what you pay for.

Ayuh,... Actually, that's Exactly what I'm sayin'....

The wood, 'n glue used in exterior plywood is the Same as marine plywood....
The few voids in CDX haven't been a problem for me...
All the plywodd used is incapsuled in glass, 'n resins...
I'm using the plywood for strength, 'n stiffening...

Now,... I've found CDX in 5-ply, but I usually look long enough to find 7-ply...
Some of it might be BCX, but when dumpster diving, ya take what ya find....
I rarely find ACX...

In regards to the USS Constitution (one of my favorite ships), there are two historical facts: 1) There was no fiberglass in 1797. 2) There is probably no splinter of structural wood in that ship that remains from 1797. Check out the restorations in 1925 and 1995 here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uss_constitution

One may argue that two 20th century restorations aren't bad for a 200 year old ship. Then again, she had the entire Navy department involved in her maintenance 24x7 throughout her active duty.

In the late 18th century, the Navy standard was oak and pine. In 20th/21st century powerboating, the standards are plywood and poly/epoxy fiberglass, which is what I'm using on mine.

Which is not to say I wouldn't love to be involved in making a replica 18th century square-rig. I look at 100 year old oak trees here in Florida and see the curve of the branches into the trunk and think...oh, what knees that would make...
