I have been lurking on the forum for a couple of months. I am about to purchase my first starcraft. I have a choice of a 1976 18' SS with the original 1976 85hp Merc no tilt & trim, engine starts and runs well, hull & trailer in good shape, transom shows slight weakness in top starboard side, some of the wiring is cracked and brittle in the engine. $750

Or a 1972 18' SS with 1994 50 hp VRO Rude with tilt & trim, a 1984 9.9 Johnson kicker. I need to test engine. Seller wants to remove vro due to trouble with excessive oil in carbs.
Hull, transom & trailer in good shape.$1750

What would be your choice?

If the motor was your only buying point I would go with the merc (just my opinion) but boat wise I think the second would be the way to go (hull, transom, and trailer in good shape) Just depends on what you are looking for. I'm sure someone with a bit more knowledge of the starcraft will pipe up and give you better info. Good luck.

The real decision should depend on which motor looks and sounds best. However I like Ruds-Johney motors a lot and the benifit of a power tilt/trim will give you much better performance and less muscle work. Esp. if you beech your boat and have to go to the back and lift the d-- motor to do so . the same with loading on your trailer. You may want more motor but I had a 50 on the S/S rebuild I sold and it was very fast . However I dont ski anymore LOL it also did not have a trim/tilt and was a pain some times. I also have a 22 1975 Holliday with a 200 hp Johnson and a 9.9 Merc 4 stroke kicker.

hands down the 1994 50hp combo the 1994 is 18 years newer than the other. cracked and brittle wire neds to be replaced and that motor is so old that so many things could have to be replaced on it plus you dont want to get in to rebuilding the transom that is a real itchy pain!

If the motor doesn't start how accurate is the compression test on a motor that isn't warm?

Older Mercs are known for brittle wiring. No tilt n trim is kinda a bummer. That is nonetheless a very fair price probably.

Or a 1972 18' SS with 1994 50 hp VRO Rude with tilt & trim, a 1984 9.9 Johnson kicker. I need to test engine. Seller wants to remove vro due to trouble with excessive oil in carbs.

This is underpowered for an 18'. It will plane probably but will be pretty slow. However, that's a super low price. That 50HP is worth $800-$1000 by itself, the 9.9 is worth $500-$750 by itself. I'd probably buy that one and use it as-is while keeping my eye out for a larger outboard. Parts support is a little poorer for older Mercs compared to OMC's which have excellent support. Another plus for #2.

i think EZ has hit it on the nose on all points. you'll still be able to raise the Merc reasonably easily (the "tower of power" is also the "tower of leverage") but ability to trim it underway is nice and will increase your speed and decrease your fuel consumption. me, i'd absolutely go for the one with known transom/floor and motor half the age. i suspect you could get the 2d boat for 15-1600 and you could easily have that much into fixing up all the issues with the ancient Merc and replacing transom, even before you added TnT, on the 1st boat. you didn't mention where you are but the kicker is at minimum a really nice option and can literally be a lifesaver if you boat somewhere hairy or far from shore. altho i think EZ is maybe a little high on his $ estimate of kicker value....i'd call that a $350-500 motor. depending on your intended uses, you may find the 50hp perfectly adequate. and it's 2 cylinders vs six(?) on the Merc, a plus at tuneup time. and you could literally rebuild the 50 with ease on a home workbench.

OMCs of this vintage have issues with the "power pack" for the CDI going out so be sure to check spark on both motors.

since compression test is mostly a comparative test, you can get results accurate enough for your purposes. the motors i've tested when cold and long dead have usually given results that basically correspond to their #s once resurrected and warmed up, just 10-20 psi lower. remember that way-low reading on one cyl could just be stuck ring (not uncommon with dem nasty gummy 2 strokes and i've seen it sevl times with 4 strokes as well) so use it as negotiation point but don't tear it down til you retest after running motor through a few heat cycles.

I like my 72 Merc 1150 on my 18' SS. It is easy to work on and found power tilt/trim that I still need to install for $150. That being said, boat 2 sound like a better route. That 50 is small for the boat... I would like a 150 Merc for mine someday. But you can use it as us and wait for a more suitable engine to find you.

Howdy ; I am a mercury man, however I agree with bunker & would go with newer motors &t.t.You can splash & play for awhile, then decide what will best fill your needs

Re: What would be your choice? Merc or Rude

Yesterday, I picked up my first Starcraft SS. I decided on the 1972 18' SS with 1994 50 hp VRO Rude with tilt & trim, and 1984 9.9 Johnson kicker. After a 3 hour drive the trailer appears to be in good shape. I hope my evaluation on the rest of the boat is as good as the trailer. I did notice that the top starboard side of the transom where it meets the splash well sounds hollow.

Here are a few pics.

Yesterday, I picked up my first Starcraft SS.

Congrats. That's a real nice hull. Pretty much the same starting point as I had with mine. Looks like that trailer could use to reconfiguring to better support the stern.

Re: What would be your choice? Merc or Rude

I have not towed a boat in 20 years. My last 3 boats where glass and I had them docked. There is not much weight on the tongue. Where do I start?

I know where to start. I have weeks of work to clean out my kids junk from the garage.

I would like to thank everyone who contributes to this forum.

Merry Christmas

Move the axle back if that's possible.

Re: What would be your choice? Merc or Rude

Can I accomplish the same by moving the winch post toward the coupler? This will place the transom closer to the end of the bunk boards.

+1 on moving the winch post closer toward the tow vehicle. 10-15% of trailer/boat weight on the ball is normal.

You should consider packing the trailer bearings before using the boat. I also prefer Bearing Buddys on a boat trailer. New bearings and races might be a good investment. You also might change the water pump impeller and lower end grease. Both job tasks are very inexpensive, and the cheapest insurance you could get.

You don't need to be stranded--on land or on sea.
