What to do with this motor

I have been hanging on to this motor since I permanently retired my old runabout. It is a '72 40hp selectric. I know a lot of members are not wild on selectrics. It's been sitting in my shop for 10 years and was sitting at my MIL garage for 10 years before that. I have the controls but not the relay box. It was overhauled a year before it was put away. Is this worth anything? Is it worth restoring? If I sell it, what can I reasonably expect to get for it?

They have a bad rap, but when properly maintained they are not terrible motors.

It really depends on the condition (cosmetic and mechanical). Can you post pics? Define overhauled? If by overhaul you mean tune up, it no longer matters as it will all have to be redone. Things like waterpump, gear oil, points, etc will all have to be readressed.

I am just down the highway from you, and recently sold a few Selectrics in the $300 price range with controls. I mechanically overhauled them though, and they were in running condition.

A '72 40hp selectric? I don't believe that is a '72 model. The '72 40hp's I believe are all the single wall midsection motors and I believe those are all manual shift. They were basically a bored out 33hp. I believe if your 40 is a selectric model, then it's most likely a '70 or older. If you can, post a model number and a pic. I'm willing to bet, it's one of those earlier Super Quiet models. If it shifts through all gears okay and the seals are good in the lower unit, it should be a good motor. If there is any water intrusion and it still shifts okay, then I would re-seal the lower unit and put fresh oil in it.
