I am looking at buying a 1964 Starchief. It is partially restored and in good condition but it doesn't come with a motor. I found a 80 hp Mercury locally and was wondering if thats big enough. Also any suggestions on kicker motor size? I plan to do a little of everything fishing, tubing, and cruising.

80HP was probably more HP than was available in a single OMC engine in 1964. Merc may have has a 90HP skyscraper in those days.

That 80 hp will probably push you around 20-24 mph, so if that is fast enough then good. Probably have a tough time pulling up a skier though. A 120 or there abouts would be a better choice for water sports and would get you closer to 30 mph or a little over depending on load in the boat. Once restored that will be a very cool boat, that comes from an aluminum boat fan !!!!

In 1964 OMC offered a 90 HP V-4.----And that was quite a simple good reliable motor.-----And Mercury offered a " Tower of Power " in 1962 at 100 HP.

If I had a 1964 StarChief I would want at least 300 hp, and I wouldn't take it fishing,

Tubing ... maybe.
