1920 303 Enfield, 308 Spanish Mauser, 223 Mini 14, 44 Mag lever action, WW2 Mosin Nagant 762x54R, 762x39 SKS, all in good shape, for deer & hogs, guessing most shots won't be more than 200 yards - central TX
P.S. No kids to support for almost 2 years, good grief I still can't fathom that I got a HUGE raise and go do pretty much anything, medically retired 8 ish years ago, all my buddys are still working , supporting kids, I have ZERO bills, house, truck, car, 2 ex wives and all kids paid off!

That is something that you have to try for yourself, look at several brands for what works best for you.

Wouldn’t scope any of the military rifles.. they are what they are more or less and putting a scope on them drastically reduces their value. just buy a 308 Ruger American or a Savage. Sell the Mosin. I bet you bought it when they were cheap. You’ll buy a scope and a gun and money for ammo and won’t have to dink with bending the bolt or drilling and tapping..

I'm leaning twd 308, the mini will be grt for hogs as is
I had a Winchester Model 100 semi-auto in .308 and the recoil from that rifle was lighter than from my old .30-30. We did a camo job on it and it turned out beautiful. Scoped it too. Great gun. I bet it would work well with a reticle type optic for quick sighting.

Well. Spanish Mauser in 308 is a re chamber that was done in the 50s. Mosins were made in the millions as well and at one time they were as cheap as $80 each or a crate of them for $500. now they’re pushing $600 each. Modify one and it’s worth $150… looks like a Spanish 308 Mauser starts at $600 for a nice example. I know the action is smooth. Remington 700 has a copied Mauser action for a reason.

Most like the 5.56 due to cheap ammo, but something with a bit more punch, real flat and gun and can find them cheaper is the Savage 6.5 Creedmoor

In TX the big thing is hunting wild pigs by helicopter, unlimited kills, lots of guys like semi auto 300 Blackout, but my 223 or 762x39 will work fine as well

Yeah, I've seen some videos of that. Around here, the hog hunters seem to like night hunting with NV/IR scopes on suppressed rifles at a couple hundred yards.

As for me, I'm more of a traditionalist. I dug around and found pix of my old Winchester Model 100.

Oh and looking at rifle/scope combos - some good ones, 308 and 30.06 same prices, and scopes, Iv'e shot both, 3006 more expensive ammo than 308 which suffices for pretty much anything but 3006 a tad overkill although that will kill pretty much anything at 3000 fps , but I'm not going to blow through it like 223 semi auto

Would a coyote tackle a hog? Sounds like you guys need some kind of natural predator to keep them in check.
