5 blade prop? What size boat is this? What is the pitch? How many rpm's are you hitting at wide open. That may be why your having a hard time getting on plane, too much blade for that 4.3. Not enough torque to get that heavy boat up to speed with all that blade surface hook'n up.

Re: What motor is this?

you should look into getting the correct slave solenoid for your engine

the one in your pic (blue) is not the right style, and mounted incorrectly too

The item referred to is that blue thing hanging on the starboard side of the engine, at the front. Strictly speaking it's not the slave solenoid, that lives on top of the starter motor. That blue thing is the 'starter solenoid', and it ain't marine! Buy the correct one and throw that thing in the bin before it gives you a one way trip to the moon! The part number for a new one is 89-96054...

I think you need to get use to the fact that owning a boat is not a cheap hobby. 2 things about a boat remain constant.

1. BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand.
2. A boat is "a hole in the water into which you pour money".

For your boat to remain in good safe working condition you are going to be spending money, and there is no way around that!

Re: What motor is this?

tell me about it. the deck was unsafe so the 1500 dollar diy stringer and deck replacement was in order and I'm already planning on pulling the motor and rebuilding the outdrive this winter so a 15 dollar prevention to a future problem is a warm welcomed sight. Another quick question, my outdrive seems to have a small and when i say small i mean small, not even enough to drip, but you can tell it is oily on the surface, coming from the water pickup, and from the small hole on the starboard side near the skeg. i think its some kind of vent hole, i looked it up and its not supposed to have a bolt or anything in it, because that was my first thought. Is it just a bad seal in the outdrive?

I beg to differ MERCRUSIER specifies that as a slave solenoiod and the one mounted on the starter, as the starter solenoid, the slave , provides 12 volts to the coil while cranking not needed on the cars that use that cheap chevy stuff.

Hi-Jack!!!

It's not a Hi-Jack at all, up on post #24 the OP asked what a slave solenoid was. Unfortunately, Chris got it backwards, and captk was pointing out the error since the OP didn't know.

I just figured since the OP title was satisfied, it should of been closed at post #12. And now at #33 we're looking for a gear oil leak?!

Which is why people shouldn't try to make one thread do everything. When I see a thread asking what motor it is, I sure don't expect starter questions, and gear lube leaks (missed that one completely) oh well.
It still isn't a hijack since the OP asked the question to begin with.

Re: What motor is this?

sorry guys i guess i should have started a new thread, Im used to being in the boat restoration forum where everyone wants everything kept together instead of starting a new thread for everything. Im still a newbie, but when i looked up the part there is a starter solenoid, is it the wrong part?? should i be buying a slave solenoid instead? I'm all confused here

Re: What motor is this?

What did you look up? The starter solenoid mounts on the starter itself and is bolted to the starters housing. The slave solenoid is that blue solenoid in your picture.

Did I? If so maybe you'd like to tell Mercury that too....
