Gm 4.3
What numbers are you looking at on the block? That engine should have the mercruiser numbers on a sticker on the inner side of the valve cover. Starboard side by the carburator below the purple wire in your picture.

Ayuh,.... 'n there should be a little aluminum tag on the block, just above, 'n slightly forward of the starter....

Wasn't sure if that 4.3 had the metal tag.

I was looking at the numbers on top of the block where the carb mounts up to, not sure what the piece is called but it says 89 and has a bunch of numbers stamped on it

Well quit looking there and look in the locations that Don S gave you in the diagram.

the number on the tag is C872344. So would this make it an 89 4.3?

If it's a 2 barrel carb it's a 1988-1992 4.3L
If it's a 4 barrel carb it's a 1988-1992 4.3LX

That number is a '4.3L', 1990. It has a Mercarb 2bbl carb and thunderbolt IV ignition. It was rated as 175hp.

Re: What motor is this?

Sweet Thanks guys! Its got more power than i thought. The title says 155 hp but i didn't even think it had that much after looking at some of the specs on the internet. This takes all the guessing out, Thanks again guys! Could you convert it to a 4 barrel and get more power out of it?

Re: What motor is this?

so would it be worth looking into finding someone parting out an old 4.3 with a 4 barrel and swap them or would it be easier to just buy a new one? are there any new ones that are acceptable for marine use from a different brand?

Re: What motor is this?

Ouch i didn't think that they would be that pricey and i didn't figure in the fact that i would need a new intake also. I think the stock setup will stay for now but when i go to replace my transom and pull the engine i think i will convert over. The 25 extra ponies would probably help me get on plane faster. i wish i could spend the money I'm going to spend on my stereo on the motor, but the cassette deck just has to go.

Consider yourself lucky they are that CHEAP!. In Australia we pay over $700 just for that carb....

Unless you have a new way of putting a 4bbl carb on a 2bbl manifold hole....

If you're thinking of pulling skiers, just put a smaller pitch prop on...

A decent MP3/CD player is less than half the price of that carb!
