What kind of primer and finisher to use?

I am refinishing the hull of an old 13.5 Boston whaler from the mid 70s. I've sanded it down for the most part but I'm not sure what kind of primer etc to use for it. I read about Pettit H2 Prime as a good under coat, but what should I put on top of it? Or should I use something else to prime it?

Choose a brand of paint and go with their recommendations for the exact product you plan to use, they will lay it out pretty well. It's not the only way to do it, but it is the safe way because you know the products will all be compatible.

Why not gelcoat? A little harder to do than paint, but might be worth it.

Is the boat a Trailered boat or a Marina boat. If trailered you might want to take a look at the last link in my signature line. Will save you some money And it IS a very durable application.

That's what I figured, but the directions really aren't all that well laid out as far as what the product is intended for, whether it will work with the undercoat, or if it would be a suitable topcoat.

You haven't mentioned a paint, only a primer, so we have less information to go on than you.

Just about every paint will give you details on how to use it, prep, primer, how to apply, recoat time, etc.

My $0.02 cents worth, I would only use catalyzed primers and paints on any boat project if you want a finish that will resist oils, fuel, and scratches. But that is just me. Regular paint without a hardener (catalyzer) will not be very tough and will scratch easily and dissolve if fuel is flashed on it. JMHO
