I prefer a finely aged lot of Fredric Millers' finest lite, takes me to where I want to be. :) :) We refer to it as "Sampling the High Life". ;) :D :D

I like whisky. Jack Daniels made me a Tennessee Squire a while back.

I've got a buddy who's been working on a bottle of Labrot & Graham Woodford Reserve. That is mighty fine bourbon.

Does it measure up to "Makers Mark"? I have tried Gentlemen Jack, Single Barrel and Old number 7 and still find better than any of the others. 'course I am still sampling and reserve final judgement on the matter. ;)

I haven't tasted any scotch for 15+ years and I can't remember what brand it was. Maybe I'm due...
So a single malt means it has a distinct flavor and blended is singles mixed together?
What would a 'rookie' try first?

Trying out scotch is a lot like trying out cars, Magster.

If you start with a premium grade, single or blended, you wont much like the pedestrian stuff.

Sort of like getting used to driving a Mercedes or Beemer, then getting into an ordinary vehicle.

Though I am not a big Bourbon fan, I suspect that it is the same. . . Sour mash or Wild Turkey vs. rotgut or Everclear (Ball or Mason).

Though I must admit, some of the nicest Bourbon I ever had (in my misspent youth) came in a Mason jar. Then again, maybe it was the grapefruit juice we mixed it with. :D

mags,

I would start with a blend. Chivas is a good choice as it is reasonably priced and smooth. Should be sipped neat as JB has posted above, but I would suggest ice to begin so you won't get scared away . . . ;)

Not necessarily, but most beginners prefer ice and a little dilution, I still do . . . however, as the ice melts it becomes too watery so you better "suck it up" :D

Quick question here, what gives distilled spirits their color?
Since, the original subject has already been modified may I ask for opinions on Jack Daniels Single Barrell.

Whiskeys are aged in wooden casks, either used sherry casks (scotch) or charred oak (bourbon). That gives them color.

Vodka, Gin and most rums are not colored. Don't know how or where they are aged, if at all.

White lightning, usually technically bourbon, is "aged" in glass or plastic jugs for as long as it takes to get it to market. :)

Not familiar with any Jack other than Old No. 7 sour mash.

BTW, I grabbed another glass of the Macallans to wait for replies. Glenfiddich is a dependable standby for me as it is more available than the Laphroaig. When all else fails I go for the Chivas. Isn't Dimple a blend?
Good Question, Aldo. (and members) I still haven't found Dimple at any of my local retailers.
I would think that at the price it would be single malt and well aged.

Perhaps you should try the Single Barrell and give me a report. Although, it probably won't change your affection for scots.

techno,

Dimple is a blend, noted above by Stan. I just did a Google and now understand a confusion of my own. Apparently, Dimple is marketed as Pinch in the US. You'll find Pinch all over the place . . .
