Bourbon is made up of corn, malt, and rye. "White lightening", or more proper, corn whiskey, is corn and sugar. And it is aged. I have had some very fine 6 month-old corn whiskey.

Re: What is your favorite single-malt scotch?

In my youth in North Carolina I experienced a variety of clandestinely distilled spirits. Some were corn whiskey, some were "chicken feed" whiskey, and some were technically brandy (fruit) or vodka (potato). Some proofed as high as 150, but most were watered to the lowest proof that didn't turn away customers.

Most were very nasty stuff. All were called "moonshine" or "white lightning". "Everclear" was the brand name that the state used to sell confiscated moonshine bourbon that was judged to meet some standard they set.

The "bourbon" I referred to was made by a neighbor who did not sell it. He made small batches for himself and a few friends. I think he even gave some to our local Police Chief. :)

1.- Laphroaig, 2.- Macallans, but ... if it's Scotch I'm offered, I'll gladly accept and enjoy ... :)

You give me a chuckle, JB ... after making friends in the South I, too, started learning about the "local" spirits and have to admit that some was about as good as it could get.

Thoughout Tn, Ms, Nc, Al and Va I've been offered some positively "Primo" home made liquid refreshment. But then I've also been offered some stuff that would better serve as lighter fluid .. :)

When I was in the Marine Corps just out of boot camp and on mess duty a group of us decided to make up some brew. One of our group came up with the idea that vanilla extract would be good for a start. Started out buy filtering it through a couple of pieces of toast mixed a few other things in turned out to be as smooth a gravel but did the job.

The difference between Scots and Bourbon is what? Aside from the flavor which is distinctly different. Scots has an identifiable taste whether blended or not. Some allusion to the differences between whiskey and gin have been made, is gin a grain alcohol. Is Scots not? I thank you. The first one is always on me...

Actually, Techno..., we started out talking about single malt scotch, not single malt whiskeys in general or distilled spirits in general.

Just sort of drifted. That happens when good friends have a nip together. :)

Thanks for the clarification, JB. Am I still not inbounds with regard to the subject matter? I was interested in hearing answers to my questions. Perhaps we are all talked out, or too influenced. :D

Re: What is your favorite single-malt scotch?

Technoquiet ... Scotch is pure barley and the term "malt" comes from alowing the barley to germinate and sprout before grinding, wetting, heating and distilling.

Scottish distilleries spread the barley on the floor, brush it one layer thick and allow it to "malt" there before sweeping it up and starting the distilling process. The modern argument is several small vats (traditional) versus fewer (often one) large vat.

"Single malt" merely means one type of barley only mixed with nothing else.

Bourbon is made from corn (generally) and is dried and ground before distilling by not generally allowed to "malt".

The addition of any other grain makes the product a Blended Whiskey.

Thank you sir, I bow to your superior intellect.
Next question: What is the difference between Bourbon and blended whiskey. If the difference between straight whiskey (bourbon) and single malt scots is the ingredient. What are the stages in distilling?
Have I annoyed the pig yet. :p

Current inventory in our cupboard:

One bottle Johnnie Walker Black Label
One bottle Glenfiddich Special Reserve
One bottle Macallan
One bottle Famous Grouse
One bottle Havana Club Añejo Especial Rum
One bottle Southern Comfort
One bottle Unicum (Hungarian liquor)
One bottle Trejos Debynerios (Latvian liquor)

All of the above unopened and dusty from sitting there for years. Don't know how some of them got in there in the first place.

However, also:

One nearly empty bottle of Lagavullin
One nearly empty bottle of Martell Cordon Bleu cognac

Guess that says it all about our preferences :D

Not much sense in keeping empty bottles about, or storing things you don't use for that matter. ;) I would offer to take them off your hands but in trying to send Dunaruna a bottle of glenfiddich I have come realise the red tape would be to much.

I keep empty bottles around, Techno. Each one is a memento of a special moment.

I also store full bottles, waiting for the right occasion.

Makes plenty of sense to me.

Come to think of it, I wonder if "Old Rotgut" poured from a Chivas bottle would taste any different. :D

To each is own, JB. I think there is a wide difference between expensive and good. The more you drink the better it taste, but in the morning the money you didn't spend the night before will will be hard earned..... ;)
While this conversation has been going on I have been enjoying Cutty Sark which was less than half of money I put into the glenfiddich. Also, after finding the glenfiddich in Fresno, our local source set it up on their shelves for about a half a sawbuck less than I paid for it in Fresno. Have you tried the Single Barrell yet?

Re: What is your favorite single-malt scotch?

Anyone ever tried Dalwhinnie 15 yr single malt? Curious as to reviews; I bought it for company (felt like I should have a quality single malt on hand), but it's still sitting unopened 4 years later as I don't particularly like Scotch, and haven't had the right company to open it...

I should've bought a premium bourbon instead; bourbon, ummmm.

Re: What is your favorite single-malt scotch?

Sorry, no comment on that scots, but aged well is always a positive indicator. The premium bourbon I can speak to in general terms. As they say "there is no accounting for taste:"
Subject to evidence to the contrary, I still feel penny for penny liter for liter, Makers Mark is by far the superior bourbon. I thank you. Until the holidays.....

I've had and like Dalwhinnie 15 yr. It is very smooth and easy on the beginner, yet still a very fine single malt. I'd buy again.
