What is this part called...goes under mast.

Hhmmm… Of all the masts I’ve seen, never saw that. Looks like a tensioner?

Mast Raiser ,,,,,,, talked to a few sailors, they never saw anything like that . Top ( maybe ) slotted part goes into a channel that secures it . Worm gear goes into the base of the mast . When you turn the flanged part it would raise or lower the mast depending on its intial position. That's my guess and that contraption is just that , a contraption of some sort that never took off .
