so if i need to choke the motor to start it i have to take the whole cover off ....... bad design

Round unit beside it is the electric choke, the manual one was meant as a backup in case the electric failed, good design actually.

looks just like my 1976 70hp merc. On the inside of your cover there should be a pull rope. If your battery dies the manual choke and pull rope will get you back to shore

Have never had to manual start mine, hope I never have to.

I have had to use the manual choke once when the plastic arm on the electric choke solenoid plunger broke.
