What is this on the transom?

Would love to see some screen shots and know what unit/ transducer your using to get "amazing detail" in 650 ft. of water.

Running a Garmin with a 500W GT51M transducer. Traditional CHIRP gets me to @ 1,200 ft, but I run out of juice with side scan in the 70-75 ft. range. ClearVu gets me in the 200-225 ft. range but not with any detail.

Think I said you can see the bottom detail in 650ft…not sure about you…but I don’t anchor in 650ft of water usually .
It’s just a cheap raymarine dragonfly 4 pro with a transom mount transducer for down vision, sat in the bilge of the boat.

Happy to get screen shots for you next time out. It’s quite impressive for a few hundred quid, to be fair. I might have one in my photos of a sunken boat. Can see the outboard on it quite clearly. That’s in about 65ft of water. Boat has been sunk since the 70’s we think

Don't worry about it......misinterpreted your post as being able to see "amazing details" at 650 ft.

I have no problems seeing larger objects up to 75 ft. in calm water. The lack of "heave compensation" on the unit really puts a hurt on locating fish sized targets that those depths in open water.

You’ll be right, I’m sure. I’m no expert on these things at all. Nor am I in any position to advise on serious ability or use for a serious angler. I can hardly bring myself to touch a fish…never mind go after one .

I ordered my Whaler with a Raymarine Downvision chirp system. I can switch it to "fishfinder" or "Downvision" as I desire. It shows me a detailed view of the bottom, OR a bunch of fish.

First of all, I don't admit to knowing all the complicated stuff, but I can only report my findings.

Our Summer trip to the Saint Lawrence River is partly for fishing, but the wife likes to cruise as well. The location is the border between Northern NY and Ontario Canada. Most awesome place, but I digress.

The Raymarine unit works awesome in that regard. The water we fish in ranges from 12 to about 30 feet. But wait, there is more.

There is a spot in the river that is about 300 feet deep. Reportedly, some years ago an Ocean Freighter sank in that spot. I just had to check it out with my Raymarine.

Wholly crap..... I can see a ship down there.

The $1200 I paid was well worth the price.

OTOH, sometimes I see fish but they aren't hungry.....>LOL.

Took me a minute to figure out what I was looking at in your screen shot.

The presentation is much different than Garmin ClearVu. Image looks like a cross between down scan and side scan.

Turns out the difference is in the transducers. Garmin uses a 3 crystal transducer with a dedicated to clearVu crystal.

Ray uses a 2 crystal transducer. Creates the downscan image using a composite of the two (side) crystals.

Not great photos, but that's how I've got it setup right now. Looking at the exterior in the photo, it's a little ungainly. But in real life, I nearly never notice that cable, and it has never gotten in the way (even the dog gets in and out without a problem). I like that I can very easily pull the system and stick it in another boat (as if in I actually wanted to use it to fish), but if I had to do it over again - and I may still one day - I'd get a longer cable and run it to the other side of the outdrive (port side).

The stern saver is "glued" on to the hull (it comes with the adhesive), then the transducer mount is screwed into the stern saver. (Not mine - just an image off the net)
