Volvo's cone clutch in even the SX make it a better mousetrap than the more popular Merc Alpha. However, the popularity of the Alpha makes it more available and more easily serviced. There are also more options including complete drive replacement from lower cost competitors. This is not true of the Volvo.

If you bring the Merc Bravos into this discussion then the cone clutch and heavier duty components kind of equalize the discussion. Hence my budget questions.

Usually you don't have a choice if you are going for a certain brand boat but if you do, I would definitely get a Volvo SX over an Alpha just because of the cone clutch and the raw water pump mounted on the engine where its easier to replace.

An iBoats member is working on a Mercruiser 470/OMC Stringer Hybrid and claims extensive testing has proved it to be the hottest thing on the water.

it'll be even badder when he gets the turbo mounted....
